I used to work at a place that developed a DAW in the browser, and yeah, we used a WASM Ogg Opus decoder to save on storage costs for our sound library. We earlier had to have mp3s for safari devices. With opus being opus we really wanted t

I'm still unsure of why I'd want to move to jj from git. My ideal git workflow is pretty simple: 1. `git switch -C new-branch` 2. Make changes, time passes 3. `git add .` 4. `git commit -m "Description of changes made"`

This predates my own web developer journey by a good 15 years, and I found one feature that I'm unsure about how it ever worked. Navigating to "Virtual Field Trips" takes you to http://satftp.soest.hawaii.edu/

I can agree on all of the points except "Speaking English". The way things are going it's going to be either that or mandarin regardless, but there's so much culture in language that IMO it'd be a shame to hurry it

I'm having some real issues with legibility on this page. I'd like to encourage the author to decrease the font size, increase the line spacing and look into a smaller max-width for the paragraphs. It'd also be nice to have s

To me the question "Why would I use X over Y?" in programming space is a bit redundant. Why would I use Kotlin over Closure? Why would I use Groovy over Scala? Even only considering JVM languages you run in to way too many options

As a guy who surfed the unemployment wave twice the last year, this was a fun read, albeit sad.

Not a video game developer - but I wonder if it'd be a good call for videolan to make a vlc plugin for godot? It's still gaining momentum and (afaik, could be wrong) have the same thing as unity with a inbuilt media stack but it&#

Happy I'm not in a hurry with any specific work items today. Hope it's not too much of a mess to figure out for the github peeps. Much love to them.

For better of for worse, the title of this site is "Hacker News" - and hackers tend to have strong feelings about privacy issues like this. I personally appreciate articles like this being posted, as they don't _really_ feel

I both agree and disagree with you here. The expectation of the podcasting business to be full of great opportunities and monetary gain was (probably) misguided, but 25% market share in an established market in just a couple of years when t

For what it's worth Spotify is the most popular podcast platform in the US, with 25% of the userbase: https://explodingtopics.com/blog/podcast-listeners#podcast-p... I'd say that gamble in particular worked.

The company I worked for when GDPR went into action used kafka in every configuration possible. I've seen some pretty decent uses but also some horrific ones. I agree with the author to an extent - kafka is overly complex for low traff

I support this fully. Juniors and intermediate engineers I work with still struggle with git quite often and I personally know how that feels firsthand. Not sure if this solves the issue. I personally recommend using git, but keeping it si

Going out on a limb here, but I would guess it doesn't. If the pricing will be similar to the other entry in the field lineup (TX-6) we're looking at many multiples of the price of a Zoom H4n Pro, which I also would guess has a wi

GPU modularity makes the framework even more interesting for small form factor pc projects. I might pick it up for my re-imagining of the ibm ps/2 laptop.

This has basically refueled my idea of making a modern version of the IBM PS/2 Model P70. Instead of desktop components I can use parts of a framework pc to skip out on a lot of the horrors of planning custom builds like this.

Mastodon simply won't be able to scale at the rate this is going. It's simply too expensive to run the instances and too labor intensive to moderate. TBH I think it might've been a mistake from mastodons side to allow media h

If Meta is removing non-essential employees I wonder if we could see the core react team having to leave at some point. That could be quite the shift for frontend work.

There are many ways. You need outside help for everything though - you need someone to input the current board state into some kind of chess engine, and then relay the best possible move back to you somehow. There have been cases where some
