But there is great value in telling that new user "Hey this doesn't look like an email address, please check it before continuing". Then accept whatever they put in (because really, email addresses are stupidly complex).

This is probably my own biggest trigger for procrastination. I avoid writing an email or calling somebody due to fear, or uneasiness. Then over time, I avoid it further due to fear of lateness. Luckily recognizing this is half the way to

Right, there are non-investment related values to a house for most people. Kids friends in the area, nice neighbors, the landscaping you did last year, etc. So even if you couldn't sell and recoup your mortgage, doesn't mean the value of y

That's what I figured. I was hoping (wishing?) that it would be a nice drop-in, in-process async endpoint for when I needed it. But it looks like the sysadmin side is a bit more complex than that.

Looks handy, does it play nicely in a normal rails deploy? I can see it being really handy as a long polling endpoint in an otherwise synchronous webapp. Before trying it though, I don't know how eventmachine can play nice inside a passenge

I've recommended a friend to implement similar marketing strategies. He has a small mac app (on HN previously), and he's already getting the good blog/twitter market, but I'm guessing he's missing lots of speculative queries. The kind whe

About the closest you'll get is the apache POI library. It's mostly an excel 97 lib, but it supports word to some extent.

Thanks for the info on UL, I forgot about the in-wall parts of things, and was focusing on toasters and such. Basically, I'm saying that the government should stay out of it, unless it's actual fraud. It bothers me that it's a monopoly on t

I'm going to argue this from the point of law, rather than the relative value of faked degrees, and if the university system has any merit by itself. From the article, it appears like there are no laws saying you can't make an unaccredited

I think there's a middle ground. By acknowledging that people come in all shapes and sizes and mindsets, you can consciously find people who compliment you or your organization well. I never think that biology should be used to discriminat

There's a contradiction inherent with that "thinking different" argument. If you accept that women on a large scale (ie, no individual example, but as a group of millions of people) think differently, then it's not absurd to say that they

I like soft validation for emails. "This doesn't look like an email address, verify you typed everything correctly, and resubmit". That way you handle legit typos, without hassling people who have weird emails (gmail plus signs and such).

You touch on a point that swings my view of the political response towards the "do something" end of the spectrum. Climate change, true or false, is tightly tied to pollution. By taking action against climate change (in the traditional wa

Jaxer is server side javascript, with access to a DOM. When I looked at it (more than a year ago now), they accomplished that via a headless firefox 3. I'd guess they still do that, since it worked for them.

Something I've looked at: http://htmlunit.sourceforge.net/ Also, I'm not sure how they do it, but Jaxer ( http://www.jaxer.org/ ) has a headless firefox instance they use. Maybe do it in a similar manner?

As optimistic as you are, saying that politics and self-promotion inside large companies is stupid, you have to remember the environment. By definition, a large company has LOTS of people, and lots of people involved in a project like chang

It makes sense if you think about it. The body is like "I need energy!" and your glycogen stores are like "sorry dude, all out", so it goes and robs the fat-convenience store for its twinkies. The issue is working out hard enough to take ou

Fat is a storage device for lots of stuff. For example, THC (marijuana) builds up in fat cells. Losing weight releases some of that stored up junk. It's not out of the question that some of it would cause you to stink up a storm.
