For me it really depends on the project. When I joined my current company we were much much smaller (6 engineers total), and there was a lot of new stuff to be built. I could easily work 8+ hours in a day, of actual coding. Now, I probably

Thanks! I wish Hashicorp the best of luck getting hosted clusters out the door, totally agree with you about table stakes.

First off, very cool. I'm a big Hashicorp fan, and have been following Nomad for a while, so it's exciting you hit 1.0! It seems to me one of the advantages K8s has is that there are multiple "Kubernetes as a Service" se

The former would be something like Hasura right? As a backend dev, I get nervous when I see a tagline like "Instant GraphQL APIs for you data", because I worry about the schema and operations that are exposed.

They're not really related here. The premise of my question is more around the fact that with REST, which database queries you'll run are fairly static and are known by the backend based on what APIs they expose. Therefore it'

I see, thanks for the explanation! I think a lot of my coworkers think of GraphQL as some magic where it lets the client query for arbitrary things and avoid us having to add query parameters where appropriate, so I never got the whole pict

I see, so you're saying that the GraphQL contract wouldn't actually allow querying by phone number in the first place?

But in this imaginary situation, there's no efficient way to query the database without adding an index, and the suggestion is it's harder to know what your clients will call versus REST because one is statically defined while the

A cursor doesn't really help much if there's no index on our imaginary `users.phone_number` column. But based on another comment, it seems that we'd limit the ability of the clients to query by phone number in the first place

There's something I never quite understood about GraphQL, and this seems like a good thread to ask! With REST, all my APIs are defined and I can easily test all the database queries my server will run, check that they're indexed,

When you say "But the more freedom you give individual teams to push to the common branches", what do you mean? I've typically only seen CI merge to master, and disable pushing.

Fair. I think the company wants me pretty badly, and knows I'll likely stick around because I'm still vesting. So there's no incentive for them to grant an exercise window extension at this point.

Yeah it's a good call out, in this case FMV is about 1/3rd the preferred. Sadly the that still puts it out of reach for me, but means I can afford to exercise at least some.

I think you hit the nail on the head, it's frustrating because there's no clear answers, very little resources on the topic. I'm actually in Canada, so I'm not sure on the ISO -> NSO distinction. I do think your advic

I joined very early (~15 people total at the company) and have been unsuccessful negotiating an increase. I guess the lawyers have to get involved, board has to sign off, and that's tough. Or at least, that's what I've been t

100% agree. I'm in the low 7-figures right now (on paper), and will probably be mid-7 with the next round of funding. So I have 0 chance of affording the taxes if I wanted to leave, and am kind of at the whim of the board if they want

This hits home. I'm a fairly early employee at a unicorn, with no exit in sight. I've talked to the cofounders about extending my exercise window, and got the response of "We can probably do that when the time comes". Of

We use Rippling at work, and I'm not quite sure what justifies a billion dollar plus valuation. (not to say it doesn't, I'm just super curious) Anyone care to weigh in? I suspect there's a lot of things that behind the s

Wait, you're saying it costs 12x as much as your salary? That doesn't seem right... the company I'm at uses it pretty heavily and we're at about 1x of a FTE salary (and it's still super worth it)

If you look at what they've released, it seems this was the best outcome. I don't know if Focals 2.0 were ever going to see the light of day, and Focals 1 plus the Myo weren't exactly a hit. I do feel bad for the employees wh
