Maybe? But I think its more just a natural evolution. Scott Hanselman has been making noise regarding open source for years [1]. I'm not saying Scott is responsible, just that many people have been suggesting it for a long long time.

Codezero is correct - "need" is the issue. Foursquare isn't paying me (or exchanging something of significant value) for that constant stream of location data. THAT is the issue I have with it

I think its very clever. I really like how your example takes me through the steps first, then asks to sign me up for an account. Much better than asking to create an account first, then walk me through the app.
