The training data is just billions of {RGB image, text description} pairs. So, it appears the model figured out how to make the normals as part of the process of making the images. Or, are you asking how the researchers extracted it? >

As an old 3D graphics engineer, the fact that albedo is in there is as just striking as it should be expected. The core components of physically based rendering are position (derivable from image XY and depth), surface normal, incoming ligh

There’s all kinds of “random”. AFAIK, ChatGPT finds the set of most-likely next word, sorted by likeliness. Then, selects from those, more likely the more likely ones, varying away from the top picks in proportion to the “temperature” param

I think the original law was: Manual registration required for 22 years of protection. Manual re-registration required for a 22-year extension. Public domain after 44 years at most. I’d support that. Make something at 18. Sell it until you

Long ago, maybe before the consumer internet, I saw a video claiming to showcase people who studied tai chi as a fighting art instead of just exercise. It was a lot of being able to follow the other person's movements to the point that

But, that's not what Gödel proved. Not that things are hard, or non-obvious. But, that there are actual limits we won't be able to get past regardless of how much time and cleverness we apply to them. The limits might be very larg

Sure, to get Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K 60FPS, we cheat like hell. But, a scene from 70s ray tracing research at 800x600x24 fps on a 4090 doesn’t need to cheat much.

Traditionally, if you have a real scene that you want to be able to reproduce as 3D graphics on the computer, you either: 1. Have an artist model it by hand. This is obviously expensive. And, will be stylized by the artist, have a quality l
