I think “vulnerabilities” are always worth thinking through like this. If a YAML library you only use to read in a config file at startup has some buffer overflow bug...who cares? It’s usually painless to just bump the version, but just bec

I think the point is that the build is “stable” not that the dependency is. The last thing I want when I’m implementing a feature is to have to deal with some unwanted, unrelated API change because a dependency was updated.

I think homework like this is only appropriate if you compensate the applicant. It's really no different from requiring hours of studying prior to an interview, and the addition of deliverables makes it feel extra icky to me. Every tim

I agree that the time dimension should at a minimum be communicated, and longer term analytics on this kind of data can almost always be done without associating the data with individuals.

Right, this exception seems predatory; and I think it should only apply if a loan is delinquent. That seems to be the intention of the law, but it's probably broad thanks to a lobbyist.

Shout out to vinegar! The huge jugs of "cleaning vinegar" changed my life a couple years ago. I still use diluted bleach for the bathroom every once in a while, but vinegar is sufficient for almost everything day-to-day. And it&#x

I purchased some at Home Depot recently for $4/pc (they had plenty in stock, Seattle area). The company mentioned here is selling [0] them for $3.75/pc, but only in quantities of 20 ($75). I wish N95’s did not necessitate the seco

Every request at FB is handled in a new container. This isn’t absurd, it’s actually pretty neat :) Edit: I don’t know what I’m talking about. Happy Monday!

This is actually already a thing, but doesn't seem to work consistently. I've seen it happen on a few popular projects and its magical; but I can't figure out why it doesn't work on some of my repos. Edit: checked a litt

As I understand it, Robinhood had a cash problem because of the various collaterals required for high-risk securities during the clearing process. When each share traded needs a high amount of collateral (1:1, even), and you have a high num

Accomplishing what I thought were standard tasks with Gradle always felt like fragile hacks. The nature of being a younger build system with more API evolution means there are at least 3 ways to do something, without good explanation, and t

I don’t think Apple has a strong argument, given the feature set of the app, but I also think the name is kind of tacky/in poor taste. I used an identical app for years called Caffeine. Yes, Apple should buzz off, but choose your battl

Lately, I just call the restaurant and do a pickup order. I get the food a lot faster and I don’t end up paying $40 for a $16 pizza. There are some times when delivery is great, maybe I’m sick or have had a couple beers, or don’t have my ca

Totally fair, but I think the Venn diagram of folks that use Docker and folks that have 4GB of RAM is pretty slim. If the resources are that limited, Docker might not be the best choice for running anything. Related: Chrome on 4GB of RAM so

RAM is the same situation as disk for me — I have plenty to waste. Again, not advocating Chrome in a container, I don’t even run Chrome outside of a container. I just think it’s odd to get hung up on these sorts of resource requirements giv

Totally agree that Docker is made for deploying to servers. But the disk space critique doesn’t hit for me. Even very nice SSD’s are cheap enough that 500 MB is negligible. My internet connection also makes downloading a large docker image

Bit confused by your comment—Costco is a big box store. I paid maybe $10 for the bottle. I’m not taking it daily, nor do I take more than a standard amount. I was just commenting that it’s sold in much larger quantities here, not that I’m a

I take a standard adult dose in the morning, 6-8 hours after I stop drinking and after plenty of water. I’m not worried about it. Also, to be fair, I usually take ibuprofen. Acetaminophen hits different though, sometimes it’s what you need.

That’s really interesting. I have a bottle of probably 300 acetominophen caplets from Costco, it’s my go-to hangover cure. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are incredibly common in the US.

I don’t know if I agree with you, but I think an example of what you’re describing is the TurboTax web UI. You’re shown multiple “loading screens” where things like “We’re looking everything over!” are said to the user. The user is given th

Absolutely, executors offer much better (safer, more consistent) lifecycle management of a Runnable vs. a homegrown solution in my experience. The last time I extended Thread I think it was just to pull off a custom name format.
