I suspect it's the Intergalactic Highway idea: the Earth is a single point of failure for the entire species.

I tend to agree -- there's no compelling need to get to Mars. But there are many large problems that would be worth working on. Food supplies and distribution, renewable energy, poverty, basic education, civic engagement, etcetera. Self-suf

I'd be more concerned with signal interception. Assume they use current RC tech[1], which is designed to elimiate interference or capture error, but that doesn't mean it's infeasible. That would be a troubling twist. Suppose a related idea

Anyone that's played GTA Vice City enough knows an RC heli could manage at least one casualty pretty easily on failure (and, just to be sure, I've personally seen enough nitro-powered chicken dances to know this is possibly a _low_ estimate

The part about needing better development support, debugging tools and such, for mobile browsers seems valid. I'm not familiar enough with that to really say, but I've felt similar things from my limited use of Chrome developer tools (in co

Yes, that's always been my nagging concern about 3D printing. Sure, it can print any single thing, but nearly every machine is made up of multiple parts. So either there's a set of construction machines down the line from the 3D printer, or

It seems plausible to me that a new distribution model could be borne from this tech. With a few large-scale 3D printing sites deployed geographically, delivery times for products drop to next-day or so. Alternatively, a community-based or

Somewhat annoyed that their three comparison computers are all Macbook Airs. Ignoring the fact that you're comparing different OS and most people will choose based on that alone, there are several decent Windows-based ultra-portable compute

It should be simple enough to wrap that 'after-the-break' paragraph in a style which isn't displayed on the full article page. Simple, but elegant.

Can you explain this in a little more detail, or have a blog post about it? I've been thinking about doing something similar (`screen` for shared coding environment, with some other thing -- skype, say-- for video chat). I'd be very interes

Thanks for that, it's an excellent survey -- a stunning combination of factors that he worked like hell to align (that the universe didn't simply take care of....). He's also comfortable being honest, as in that bit about optimism, and othe

I read this discussion when it showed up a few days ago, but at my work, fsf.org is accessible. Today, though, I was reading this article on Reacreational SVG ( http://intertwingly.net/blog/2007/02/16/Recreational-SVG ) and find that the li

Except that plenty of people never find a job they like. They're stuck working at Burger King or some menial office admin job, and they hate it. They are, in general, not hanging out on HN or blogging about their amazing experiences wheelin

Thank you for this detailed and thoughtful reply (as compared with downvote without comment that I got initially from whomever). Based on your excellent description here, it sounds much more like Tableau and various other general BI tools (

So, yeah, while misuse of literally literally bugs the shit out of me a lot, I'm fairly tossed up about whether it's worth bugging out over. The recent surfacing of the 'poisonous/venomous' distinction smacks of pop-culture faddism and as s

I clicked on this because there was a post on HN just the other day about _judg.me_ [1] and I assumed this was a follow-up. Interesting that this is entirely unrelated, but so close in the URL. [1]: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4012
