It's particularly annoying that the counter re-runs from zero just by refreshing the page -- and yet shows the same final count each time. Is it even actually dynamic, does the counter increment in real time if there's a new share while y

Came here to ask the same parent comment myself. Yes, they're an iconic brand within this sphere and they do great work, but these articles are part of their blog. Every page of their blog has a link to the RSS feed. I don't need help keepi

To me this is the crux of the breadth/depth issue. Matt Might deftly distills the problem in his visual description of a PhD program [1]. The SEALs getting Osama, or knowing what the company Path does, or seeing Christopher Hitchens and Wil

For some reason, I read 'Android' when I scanned this headline. But since Android is a linux variant, would this be possible? My phone doesn't have a physical keyboard, but maybe the Asus Transformer with the attachable keyboard, for exampl

Like crcsmnky [1], I've been reading HN for a while now but have contributed little. The extant comments from domain adepts generally precludes my ability to add anything constructive to these discussions. I too have noticed a shift in the

While it's nice that opposition to SOPA is getting some traction, the passage of the 2012 NDAA slipped by with little fanfare. Criticism and debate of that legislation are moot now. though NDAA is not a technological issue of itself, sectio

Interesting take. I read the parent comment to mean, 'note who signed the OSnews article', which is Thom Holwerda, whose name I'm sorry to admit I'm unfamiliar with.

That's Google issue to sort out-- to incentivize the service. The opt-in solution is still technically feasible, in the sense that it is as easy to implement as the opt-out solution.

Why would the opt-in version of the exact same solution not work? You add '_domap' to your SSID to opt-in. If you don't add that, Google agrees to remove your SSID from their records (this does require that they periodically re-scan APs, of

The article highlights a handful of wild-success examples and thus suffers from selection bias. The difficultly of tracking failed start-ups has been discussed, but has anyone studied that failure rate? Seems there's a paucity of coverage i

The most disconcerting thing is that a Google search for one of the Labs projects doesn't handle this change in any elegant way. I went looking for a description of Google Sets ( http://www.google.com/search?q=google+sets ), but the most re

I have been using a Series 9 since the week it was released. It is an awesome computer. I run Windows 7 on it and use Ubuntu in VirtualBox for *nix development work. My only reservation is the SSD is only 128GB, but there's apparently a new

I've struggled to understand 'find' for a while. It doesn't seem to fit *nix conventions in its syntax. For one, the path argument comes before any options or flags. Also, what is the point of the '-print' option? Pretty much every other ut
