You moved to Japan but it sounds like you still need to research Japaneese culture. Salaries in Japan are lower but jobs typically make up for it in stability.

This is an interesting contrast to the US. Germany educates foreigners for free because they want them to stay. In the US it is very hard for someone to stay after going through a publicly funded PhD program. Other than exporting our cultur

If your ISP wanted to give you good service they could also add a few Netflix OCAs to their rack[1]. Opening up the last mile could allow the competition to use this technique to improve service while using Comcast's (or Verizon's

Do you usually dress the same, and go through the full body scanners? My wife was upset that she got patted down every time at logan, and then she looked at the display and found out that the TSA didn't like the buttons on the hoodie

I am most comfortable with Objective-C. I agree that this would be better suited to a web-app, but I don't have the time to invest in learning a new language to do it at the moment.

HN discourages religious debates. Seriously though a Mac is obviously the best way to go. That or you could justfind an IDE you like and don't worry about the OS. Learning your way around a new operating system is probably overkill if

The problem is that health care is usually provided by the employer and they are not required to offer benefits if you work 30 hours a week. If there was a good way around this then I would love to work 75% time but you are likely to end up

In one of my 1st year engineering classes we put together similar models in MATLAB Simulink. It was a lot of fun, and we gradually built up the model until it included the coriolis effect, and accounted for different air densities at differ

I think 1:1 is a little bit of a stretch initially, but should be the long term goal. The short term goal for new hires should be to match the ratio of males:females graduating with degrees which is currently less than 1:1.[1] Once we reach

For comparison in the US: My wife and I recently took about 60 days of leave (paid) when our daughter was born, but paid leave is uncommon in many industries. Federal law requires the employer to let you take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leav

A company with good family leave policies shouldn't care, or even notice if you are male or female. Part of reducing discrimination should be taking away the idea that women are the only ones who can take care of a kid!

You can move a tree. Moving a tree successfully is completely different. If you are in a race to grow a 20', you are generally better off starting with a seedling than a 10' tree because they handle the move so poorly.
