I think it's funny how Nat capitalizes "xBox". The official capitalization that was finally settled on was "Xbox". It annoys the marketing people to no end when people capitalize it wrong. I always thought xBox looked cooler.

Fun inside MS history tid-bit: The reason x64 is called AMD64 and not x86-64 or x64 is almost entirely Dave Cutler's[1] doing. He, being constantly annoyed with Intel, used "AMD64" in the Windows NT source tree. It was used in version info

The title of the post & the underlying SO article discuss URLs. A data: URI is not a URL, but a URI. People get confused about this all the time, but a URI is not necessarily a URL. A URL is always a URI. A URN is also a URI and might b

This is bunk. The true 10x developers of the world are simply wired differently than normal. It is not about environment, at all. It is about intellect and drive. FWIW, I use Dave Cutler as my prototypical 10X developer.

its actually absurd the author excludes MS. I like using the analogy of potential energy to think about this 'battlefield'. Each of the big 5 (or 6 if you include Samsung) has a large amount of potential energy they may be able to use over

I was not making negative statement about Amazon. I was just pointing out that this trend is going to continue to make the mobile developer who's trying to target multiple platform's job harder.

Great idea. I may steal it. I do office hours 'for free' now, but this might add a nice charitable twist... Thanks.

And so the fragmentation of mobile platforms accelerates along the services axis. [1] Amazon attempts to ease the pain by offering "interface parity" with the Google Maps API, but there are significant functional differences. We are going t

A very small percentage of Windows is software-only; something like 10%. And sales to consumers represents a smallish fraction of revenue & profits compared to enterprise sales. So the lower price for upgrades will not have a huge impac

Completely agree on Samsung's proven incompetence in platform software. But that doesn't mean they won't try again.

Apple's App Store generates something near 2% of Apple's profits.[1] The number of apps that are 'for pay' in app stores is going down. I worked on the Windows Phone 7 app marketplace. The economics of running such a service are not cheap,
