The original BSD license was free too, it was just not GPL compatible. The FSF has always recommended against it, but they have always called it a Free Software license. http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#OriginalBSD

"Years since" is the right metric, because mobile phone contract lengths are measured in years, not in some ad-hoc multiples of the times between releases of the OS. I own a one year old Galaxy S, and lately I have been holding my breath ho

No need to rubbish Zed. You can like Zed like I do, and still not make any conclusion from the fact that a developer doesn't know who he is. Except, maybe, that said developer doesn't read Hacker News either.

I am curious about why didn't you just implement the CoffeeScript syntax outright? Learning just one syntax would make it easier for people wanting to deploy to JavaScript and to Lua. Imagine that C on the PDP-11 had a slightly different sy

I have started it twice: first time I got to chapter 3, second time I got stuck at chapter 4. It sounds a bit petulant to say, but I think it already has made me a better programmer. I had to stop for various life-related issues, but I love

Oh, thanks. I thought updating encrypted files required transferring the whole file, but I can see now how one could encrypt files in chunks and only transfer the updated chunks.

Three thoughts: - The windows/mac installer could have a little dialog saying "the software is free, but if you want storage, you need to pay for it" and send you to open an aws account, or use your gmail account, whatever. It's a UI proble

I think this is the client I want to use for replicating my desktop like Max Hodak describes[1]. It sure has enough options for target storage. It boasts client-side encryption, but the author says that "In terms of speed, Syncany only tran

I can agree with that. They could write less Apple stories. But if they do write Apple stories, they should recognise the people whose work they draw from as colleagues in journalism, not dismiss them as "enthusiasts".

As a journalist who has ben taught to always attribute quotations and sources, I agree with Gruber. Ina's attribution to "an enthusiast site" is disingenuous, like those non-apology apologies that say "I am sorry you felt insulted" instead

I see it as a useful tool for culling resumes from Monster-type job sites. Submit a job offer, and candidates apply to it by solving a couple of easyish tests. You wouldn't use it to interview promising candidates, but to assist you in filt

True, it's inefficient, but it's good for profiling Python interpreters, since it does a lot of work. It's also fast enough for low n (up to 8). Why write more code when you can get your result with less? Maybe the time he's saved with this

They made Touiteur (Twitter client for Android) change theirs to Plume for Twitter, which sucks. Not the new name (well, it does a bit), but the fact that they made them change a great name. Grrr.

The problem with "I'm never going to use it" is that it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Further down the line, this attitude excludes you from jobs and opportunities where you need to be able to use it. I say teach math (up to algebra and bas

Not necessarily a new idea. Just an old idea repurposed to fit a legal loophole instead of a technical need. From Wired Sept 1994, Fran-On-Demand: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/2.09/cable.labs.html "When an order for, say, Coneheads,
