The one thing that's bothering me about this is their choice to use sapphire crystal for the screen. Sapphire is definitely more scratch-resistant than the Gorilla Glass used by iPhones and high end Andriod phones, but my understanding

Heat dissipation and manufacturing concerns aside, a 3D stacked architecture seems to be the most obvious thing to increase clock speeds. Light can only travel about 30cm every nanosecond: components clocked at 4GHz can't be more than

At a really rough approximation, this is how an SSL pageview works: 1. DNS query in plaintext for en.wikipedia.org. 2. Open a connection to the resultant IP (the fact that you connect to this IP is trace-able). 3. Do an SSL handshake. 4. HT

Does it strike anyone else as unfortunate that every new social news site has to be its own completely closed ecosystem? What happened to the age of the protocol?

One alternative would be a graphical installer that asks for your root password. It would very likely also be served over unencrypted HTTP. This happens all the time, and HN never calls anyone out on it. How is this different, other than a

The lisp part isn't necessary (or necessarily helpful), but it's certainly an improvement on embedding C-as-a-string in more C. ...though I am concerned that abstracting this stuff too much makes it less obvious how to optimize fo

This is fairly obvious. From the NSA's perspective, people that act like people who have something to hide are more likely to be hiding something. I'd be surprised if they didn't take it into account.

True, but it does essentially mean that what the public considers to be "strong" crypto is not secretly broken by the NSA in such a way that they can decrypt communications in realtime or en masse.

It's a fine line, trading freedom for security. Two hypotheticals: 1) NSA monitoring known Al Qaeda operatives while being required to publish public reports detailing the scope of the surveillance (after a predetermined period of secr

Everyone loves to dress it up with "facts" and "data", but I have always been and will continue to be confident in viewing these sorts of posts as barely-glorified change aversion. Three weeks from now everyone will prefer this iteration.

We don't deal with that case adequately right now. It's up to chance which one you get charged. For customers (ie. one-time sales), we unfortunately lump this into "get it close enough and the taxation bodies won't really care". For merchan

Interesting. I haven't actually read the bill yet. I assumed it wouldn't make it this far. I guess if it actually results in tax code simplification, that's a decent silver lining.

I wrote Shopify's current US Sales Tax calculation system. Here are a few interesting tidbits: * There are over 23,000 distinct tax rates in the US. Most of these can be nicely pigeonholed as 'State', 'County', or 'Municipal'. Some can not.
