No torrents at all in this data, all publicly available/open access. Mostly scientific pdfs, and a good portion of those are scans not just text. So the actual text amount is probably pretty low compared to the total. But still, a lot

I have 20-40TB (pre-dedup) of PDFs - 8TB is a lot but not even close to the total number of PDFs available.

That’s just the way Python works though, an import reads a script line by line defining the functions and executing calls. I think that’s true of any scripting language?

Why was it possible for the junior dev to bring down prod for 24 hours? That seems like your/the organizations failure, not the poor new person. Of course junior devs don’t know the downsides and risks of what they are doing. That’s on

The hero worshiping of people who’ve made a lot of money is really boring. What impact does this “prophecy” have? None. It’s just bullshit. Just like the work from home causing Googles issues, it’s just vibes bullshitting.

The falling line would be a problem still - using fishing line as an example ignores scaling. The seed cable for example in some designs is 20 tons by itself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_elevator_construction S

Light Foundation TV series spoilers below - In the first episode, a space elevator is bombed. It’s pretty catastrophic! I think a lot of people underestimate the forces involved in something of this scale collapsing. “ The tether wrapped ar

Arguably half intel's problem is that their fabs are not performing like they used to. The first 10nm chips were disasters, the endless 14nm revisions as a stopgap, and now the various issues with intel 7…

Cooling a 200km loop with liquid helium sounds more than moderately difficult! Neat idea but not particularly possible given current material science as always seems to be the case with space elevators.

If it’s manually reviewed, then that sounds much more palatable. Basically a dash cam with a submit the cops button, sure. Automation of this is very dystopian however.

This kind of automated ticket (or beyond, think apple on devices scanning) enforcement is straight up police state/Fascism - do you want to live in a world where your existence is at every second scanned for illegal acts?

This is exactly how the x200 series Phi processors work, you get far more resources per thread in non-smt mode than the 4-way smt mode.

This is true, but a big advantage of the single pass method is data reuse. Instead of loading each element twice, you load each element once. Per bit, reading/writing to external memory is massively more energy intensive than any compu

Unfortunately, it also could be an intentionally false statement in order to push a specific political viewpoint. For example, flat tax rates without income brackets. I don’t think it’s wrong to correct falsehoods strongly in general.
