I like my Metcal and wouldn't be without it. But by most accounts the '936 clones do fine with real Hakko tips. A lot of technicians seem to like to have temperature knobs so they can dial the temperature around instead of swappi

I agree up to... new parts shouldn't need cleaning. And cheapo hobbyist-grade RF and audio connectors often have a weird chrome + some kind of oil or varnish surface finish that just won't clean off or solder and flux is a godsen

I was expecting a basic thermostat with hysteresis, but no, it's a stepwise proportional control. Your fan could very well wind up oscillating at one of the step transition points which is probably not great for the fan.

Short answer: yes. Despite the doomsayers and the fact that you might not know anyone that works in manufacturing, the US is still a manufacturing powerhouse. https://www.brookings.edu/research/global-manufacturing-sco

My favorite example is the Shakti stone, no longer on Stereophile's recommended accessories list. Who knows if they work? I have done enough EMI mitigation to think "not damned likely" but I have also done enough EMI mitiga

This discussion has been going on for a long time. Power cables are not going to fix anything. Speaker cables, I have my doubts. I use the cheap stuff, but would go for all copper if I were splurging. On the other hand, I have bought abou

Some dude did a whole series of capacitor linearity articles in Electronics World a couple of decades ago, with measurements. I should revisit them, but I don't have all the issues... but the internet gives: https://lineara

I am not an audio expert, and those circuits, 324 op-amp and all, hurt my eyes. That said, I didn't look close, and they might be fine for what you might call "utility audio". The IL300 at least has defined linearity specs.

It depends on the audiophile circle, but yes. There's a circle of folks that swear by single-ended triodes, class A operation, no feedback. I would love to hear a setup like that, but I haven't bought one (yet?), so I won't

That's a pretty good article. Also, the classic one-volt-or-so voltage limiter is a pair of antiparallel silicon diodes. You can put them in series for a bigger limit.

But the memory controller still has to refresh them. So at some point you have to negotiate a wait state, don't you?

But you have that handshake anyway now, between the CPU and the memory controller, effectively at least, don't you?

I always wondered why DRAM didn't just, after some Moore's law point, have refresh control built in. There's probably a reason I've forgotten about. Nice to see someone at least thinking about it.

I would subscribe to Byte, DDJ, Creative Computing, and Scientific American (pre-1990 to be generous, maybe pre-1970 if I'm not), if their equivalents existed today.

Start with Coombs' Printed Circuit Handbook and the IPC standards. Also call your connector suppliers and talk to their FAEs. Also if you're using a large board fabricator they may have FAEs. The rules-of-thumb you've pick

I'm a bit out on a limb there that I haven't climbed on in years. Look at the ganzfeld debate from the mid-eighties, early nineties. On the acceptance of Rhine's results,I recall seeing something similar recently, possibly h

Precompliance EMI test is cheaper than ever to put together, but a proper ESD setup is still going to be impossible to justify on a shoestring. I’ve seen other people use leak detectors and record zappers and I won’t even get into the thin
