Right but the point is that these people could never give back because they have no money. So, it's literally giving them a lot of money.

Honestly, that's not the main feedback I get. They just don't like the low status associated with tech workers. They assume everyone in tech is a dweeb and everyone is very concerned with being around people they think are cool an

Every city has a culture and NYC especially does. That said, I find this disdain for tech workers to be universal in every city. Even in SFBA, it exists largely and tech workers themselves are self-loathing. I was always around people who w

I'm not a charity. I'm not going to create some weird dynamic with friends where I am flying people out to expensive festivals. How often are you giving your friends thousands of dollars? It's not something I'd advocate

Living in a capitalist society, I feel that this is basically impossible. It's 40+ hours of what you do a week and dictates a lot of what you can do. My friends who are working for minimum wage in NYC can be cool people but they aren&#

That makes more sense. You never had the HCOL to begin with and so you never really had to suffer a serious setback in lifestyle due to taking a 50% cut. For me and most others I know, I’m only living in these expensive areas - so taking th

Didn’t think $400k/yr jobs were even an option in Florida. Maybe one of the few companies that moved to Miami over Covid I guess? Makes more sense. You weren’t near any of the traditional tech cities. So, cost of living was always goin

It can’t in Silicon Valley. Maybe in Tacoma or the very outer burbs of nyc. I don’t get the point living that far out though. You’re just in suburban hell at that point and stuck with working remote or a megacommute. Either way, over half y

The gap is much bigger between Americans and Chinese/Indian than it is between American and European. I’m not just talking about public forums. Saying anything to your superior (perceived superior or otherwise) would result in discipli

It's not just due to an employee being H1B. It's that 80% of your peers are Chinese and Indian H1Bs who bring that culture of deference to authority into the US. I don't even feel like I'm working in the US when I'm

You might have a serious amount of selection bias going on. People in SV definitely work much harder than those in NYC. I routinely had to work at 2AM and had many coworkers who were doing the same. We'd show up at the office at 9-10

Not everyone has a rich family to fall back on, bud. You could say "fall back on the government" but then this is how the government would do it. They wouldn't want you to fire people for no reason at all. In the same way tha

For those who don't know - aerhardt lives in Spain. The US seems pretty distinct in that you can be a laborer and have quite high incomes. It's not unheard of to see people in major cities within the US having 7-figure incomes and

People just need to lie more often. In many cases, they will not verify anything. If they require proof, you can say everything was a verbal offer with no official documentation. That's often how it is because many recruiters don'

It also doesn’t mean that you need to sell your soul during your teenage years so you can “have your options open” later. I went to a state school and still had a 7 fig income before I was 30. It’s by no means a requirement and I think most
