below 20% you usually need mortgage insurance (PMI) in the US. PMI is usually not too expensive with 10% down - for example when I bought a house with 10% down, the PMI was 1% of the loan value up front. When you consider the time it would

Does anyone know how accurate employers are legally required to be with these? Is this just base salary, or are they allowed to include cash bonuses, stock bonuses, etc?

I was really struggling to pick up c++, and when I read the FQA I had a 'it's not me, it's you' moment. I don't detest the language the way he does, but the FQA really resonated with me. There's no one feature

The big thing javascript has going for it are the browser's dev tools, though. I've done both and hunting things down in chrome's dev tools is orders of magnitude easier than figuring out what is going on in your c++.

As an engineer on the other side of the table - I would much rather this be the case too. I would much rather join a company, devote myself to a problem, a team, and a product, and have the company reward me as such. Instead, engineers who

The problem with yelp is that I don't trust other reviewers. Too many bad reviews are docking a business for things I don't care about, or the reviewer went in with drastically different expectations than I have, or they are simpl

I rent a SFH on the peninsula, and I get those same postcards almost weekly. I think what's most amazing to me is how much realtors are making right now. I'm not sure if it's still standard for the buyer's agent & se

I'm in a similar situation. Grew up in a very rural area, swore to never live in the country as soon as I could leave. Now I find myself wanting to move back someday - find a few acres just outside of a city. I miss the quiet and the p

Interesting, I grew up in eastern SD, pretty much right in the big cluster of deep blue counties in the middle of the country on the map. I'm trying to think of what could be responsible for the above average outcomes in this area, and

I wish 'better compiler messages' could be a language feature. I understand that that's pretty much outside of the scope of the language designers, but I've been playing with rust lately and it's so refreshing to ac

I had this same problem with an HTC 8X and a cheap off-brand charger I got from Amazon. What was weird about it was that it would only repro on certain outlets - if I plugged it in on the other side of the room, it would work just fine. It

I'm not sure I agree with the author's analysis on compensation. While RSUs at a large company don't have the growth potential of a startup, Google, Microsoft, etc still seem to be the smarter choice for compensation-minded e

The similarity between pay for Software Engineers and RNs in the bay area is a bit of an anomaly nationally. My wife is a RN and before we moved here I was making twice what she did. Now our incomes are roughly equal - before factoring in a

I haven't used WebStorm, but using VS for typescript was way better than using it for javascript. Developing typescript in VS is about as easy as developing C# in VS. Everything "just works".

Owning a home means you are subject to housing market fluctuations. If you want to move elsewhere, and housing prices have gone up substantially, you have increased equity in your current property to cover the increased cost elsewhere.
