Instagram has restrictions on the aspect ratio of pictures. Sometimes I like to consider an analogy between social networks/apps and bars. Just like a bar has a certain decor or a unique beverage or some other quirk that gives it its c

I've been thinking lately if it would be possible to create a variant of football that was just as exciting without the collisions and violence. Most of what makes me like football more than other sports can be summed up into the follo

Lately I have had a sad feeling that r/nfl has reached an inflection point where it is quickly degrading into just another large subreddit. The firestorm surrounding the NFL's domestic violence issues this season seems to have had

It seems that satellite campuses are particularly hard hit with this round. I wonder if there is a desire at the top to move more things back to redmond.

I switched back from WP8 to android a couple of months ago, and I must say the better app selection has been huge. Where I felt the app shortage hurt the most wasn't at the top - there are a few glaring omissions, and some of the apps

I think a lot of it depends on what you grew up with. I grew up with 4 seasons and gently rolling hils, others grew up with mountains, and others grew up with the beach and pleasant weather year round.

And being hit by one is an incredibly low probability event. I've been in a tornado warning probably 30 times in my life, and never once would anything bad have happened to me if I hadn't taken cover.

Some people really value the variety in weather that the interior of the country provides. I live in the midwest right now, and whenever I contemplate moving to the west coast, one of the things I would dislike the most is giving up having

Demand can be very bursty for nursing. My wife works in postpartum care, and while she usually works 3 12.5 hr shifts per week, if the hospital is going through a busy time it can be more. In addition to her normal scheduled hours, she will

That's an interesting viewpoint that I hadn't really considered before. Of course, the US as a whole just isn't that old compared to most of Europe. So it's hard for us to have buildings that are 300 or 500 years old - b

I agree with you that 100 years is not very long - I chose that number because a lot of communities in America aren't a lot older than that. The idea of a suburb didn't really catch on until after WWII, so we don't really hav

I see a lot of sentiment against the post-WW2, american, timber-based style of construction on HN and I've never really understood it. I view modern american residential construction as a model of efficiency. Why build a house out of b

I think it depends on the market and the competitiveness. I also bought a house last summer, but in a smaller, much less competitive midwest market. I watched the buyer's agent walk out of the closing meeting with a check for several t

I am terrible at remembering things, so for parts of my daily routine, I will just remember the number of things I need to grab/do, rather than the things themselves. For example, there are 9 things I need to put in my gym bag when I p

As someone currently with the company, this description of some mid-level management really resonates with me. I am incredibly skeptical, however, that any round of layoffs attempting to get rid of these people will have a good hit rate. Pl

Caching jQuery selectors may result in a speedup, but as with all caching systems I've run into nasty, hard to trace bugs that were the result of stale cached jQuery selectors. So I'd add the caveat to caching jQuery selectors tha
