I am not necessarily pro-nuclear, but one of the big problems with Fukushima is that it didn't ventilate the hydrogen that was created during the meltdown. It was the hydrogen that created the explosion in reactor for that made it go f

Poor ventilation and a stir fry on medium-high heat will bring you above harmful levels for several hours in my experience. Candles, cleaning, frying. All very good ways to increase air pollution in your home that nobody speaks about.

It could be even more, but cpython (being the reference implementation) has been kept simple. PyPy manages far more.

What I meant was that sight reading has very little do do with knowing which note a note is. This is more about learning the basics of reading. I practice 1-2 hours of scales and chords, tonguing and control every day. Being able to generat

People with a lot of money already have a much bigger political influence than poor people. So to some extent it already does.

If you want to develop this, generate simple melodies and make a play along feature. For the record: I am a professional musician (bassoon player in a symphony orchestra). Sight reading doesn't really work quite like this when you get

In my family we don't drink calories. I do give my son some fortified almond milk and some juice if he squeezes it himself (the hard way, by grinding it against whatever they are called. By hand). I realized when I was 20 that I could

And the 5a has a broken jack. The volume up button starts the assistant and there is no way to configure it. If the assistant is disabled it does nothing. Whoever thought that was a good idea?

Which means systems are not really reproducible, no? And what about rollback of broken systems?

That is a minor nuisance when dealing with raw bytes. Any sane language representation would probably store it as a separate field egen not on the wire. I would probably do BOM, LUT, BYTES. Where LUT is a lookup table of indices for every 6

Wow Marc! I see all your fun projects all the time and I feel sad I have so little time to play with them! I will make sure to dive into the internals of this during my vacation, though.

I love my pixel 5a. It is an amazing phone for the money, and probably the best cheap phone you can get with a 3.5mm jack. But intermittently I am having weird issues. Some dropped calls (I think), but also some input problems with the scr

I still use it with scheme48. Mostly for the process notation (which you can get in chicken these days). Lisp are in a great place where you can extend syntax to the problem domain. This means that you can bolt on a system like this and it

I believe all of #lang racket is written in #lang racket/base. Zuo is only superficially like racket. You likely can't do any of the fancy things in it.

This is one of those before-columbine jokes. Olin likes writing, obviously, and I suspect he started with "I did it. I did it all, by myself" and found a way to get there.

Yup. Thanks. I hate writing on my phone. I make so many mistakes that I frequently wonder if I am literate when I read things I have written.

Chibi scheme is easily embeddable. Guile is a different beast to manage, but then you get a lot more power and speed. Not luaJIT speed, of course, but a lot faster than vanilla lua, and with proper threads as a bonus. The others I haven

Ruby inherited that ?! convention fromm scheme. All mutating procedures end with ! and all predicates with !. Prefix notation has none of those pesky limitations if you can live with it :) Edit: oh. Scheme is painfully monomorphic. Equality

The java internal representation previously had a look up table for each Nth char (let's say 128, which is a nice round number), and if the indexes increased by 128 between every 128 chars it simply did a linear lookup. For most text t

In scheme you usually use symbols instead of strings because the whole equality story is simpler and much faster. I once changed a tight loop in some code from dispatching on strings to dispatching on symbols and got a 15% speedup. Why? Str

We moved to a townhouse 2km from the city centre after living 15km outside the city and the difference in noise is staggering. We had a mildly trafficked 70km/h road about 150m from our house (with a property in between) and the noise

The culture on com.lang.lisp was pretty toxic at times. I remember having Erik telling me to have a late abortion (I was 13) in a discussion about '() being false. The people that looked up to him were worse.

Of course. The rrb tree implementation in im.rs handles inserts in a way that might lead to the same problems of ropes, but without doing any rebalancing. That would make it unsuitable for text editor usage.

I see a bunch of editors using ropes. Are they in any way superior to RRB trees? My gut tells me no, but ai might be missing something.
