For a good long while it seemed like one side was definitely going to use power, if it got power, to stay in power forever -- look at Hungary for a good example -- but lately it seems like the younger generation of the other side wants the

I worked for a few years in the full-height kind, and a few years in the lipstick kind. The full-height cube was awesome, I had as much privacy as I really needed but the barrier to interruption was just low enough that people weren’t afra

Is anyone trying to hire only introverted, spectrumy, possibly older developers for their startup? Seems like it could be a big competitive advantage if you have smart managers and don’t do foot-guns like open-plan and pairing.

If by “market power” you mean a desire to invade Taiwan, debt-trap diplomacy, the open pursuit of totalitarian norms replacing Western ones globally, and territorial acquisitiveness in opposition to international law (just to name a few thi

Given Apple’s profit margin I doubt the costs per se are much of a factor. But I think there have been two administrations in a row that probably (hopefully?) reached out to “Tim Apple” and suggested he imagine a future in which stuff does

Looks nice! My best friend had a restaurant in Budapest called Kafana but sadly it closed due mostly to a poor choice of location: it was close to the Serbian church but far from the bar scene. Any idea what is “Orange Wine?” https:/&

A country with an interesting VAT/sales tax is Thailand, where large shops and chains and places in malls will add tax to the final price (and service charge sometimes) while smaller places will not. (I’m talking restaurants, VAT is i

I was at a burger place in Bangkok recently and when the bill came, every item was shown in Thai and English except the service charge, which was only in Thai (ค่าบริการ). I thought that was rather sneaky but clever, because the overlap of

I was in Singapore some years ago with a smoker, and discovered that there were indeed smoking areas (at least near many bars) but they were so few and small that they would always be full of smokers, the ashtrays would be overflowing, etc.

I have met people who can’t really code outside an IDE. If someone has a full JetBrains setup at work, and never worked any other way, it might be really hard for them to change code on demand without it. I expect there is a similar, but w

I agree it’s awful, but I very much disagree that people are doing it “less” — think of the chat apps. I think more text passes between more humans on iOS/Android than ever before in the history of humanity. It’s probably a pain, but

Where I’m from (in California) the garbage collection is done by a private company, and it looks like a pretty nice job if you’re physically fit. And it’s not looked down on at all, people there know what hauling their own garbage is like.
