It’s because they know Linus doesn’t care about software freedom[1] and it’s difficult to find kernel devs willing to sue when they know the boss doesn’t want them to. [1] e.g. when TiVo violated the GPL he let them, because apparently th

I don't have time to re-read this, so I may be misremembering the details, but my impression as I recall at the time was that this guy was depressed and wrote this book to justify his suicide - to 'prove' it was the correct c

I put my Pinephone back in its box about 6 months ago. Have they fixed the massive lag between touching the screen and it responding yet? That was the main reason it wasn’t usable for me.

Especially since a 40 year old on Facebook today will have been using it since he was 26, or possibly 24 if he was at college at the time. So he’s going to be well aware that Facebook isn’t a new hip thing. (Although he might have seen the

Many people seem to mistake Stewart for a great actor due to his diction, accent, projection, etc. I find this early video of him fascinating because it compares him directly to another talented actor, both performing the same role, and yo

My issue with this is the price. Not because it’s not worth it, but because it means no one outside of hardcore enthusiasts will buy one, that means very little software will ever be developed for it. Also I find the presence of the floppy

There were legal Linux distros that had similiar repair tools (e.g. Damn Small Linux) and fit on a 50mb business card sized CD-R. Useful to keep in your wallet before the days of USB sticks.

Why is the web browser allowing the Javascript program to access a different server than the one it was loaded from? They call this a "DNS rebinding attack", and it seems it could compromise any router that doesn't have a pa

Strange quote from the article: > Rest in peace, Mr. Wiggles. (1980-2003) #bettertohavelovedandlost Mr. Wiggles was lost due to an unfortunate adult circumcision. Can anybody explain who is Mr. Wiggles and the relevance of his death &#

As I recall, when this was registered, didn't they censor or force a name change? Not because their systems couldn't handle it, but because many third parties scrape the data and they feared it would break other people's syst

The killer feature of Bitbucket over GitHub was that they hosted Mercurial repositories. Since they stopped doing that and deleted all my Mercurial repos I haven’t seen any reason to use them.

In HAM mode it could do 4096 simultaneously but that was mostly limited to static images. For games it was 32 or 64 colors. But this was in 1985. VGA didn’t exist until 1987 and didn’t become ubiquitous until 1990. And was much more expensi

Kotlin data classes can use Java records as their implementation if running on JVM, so it’s not like you have to choose one or the other. https://kotlinlang.org/docs/jvm-records.html#declare-records...

I don't want to dig up old grievances but I think most people who have had the misfortune to interact with Kovid on a personal level would agree he is not the sort of person who deserves a penny of your money.

IntelliJ is not native, it’s Java, which ironically used to be considered a slow VM unsuitable for desktop apps, until Electron came along and was like “you think that’s slow? Hold my beer!” Now I much prefer Java desktop apps over Electron
