I feel it would benefit users immensely if developers had to sit down and watch users performing tasks in their apps that they find infuriating. It's not like we don't have the technical ability in modern phones / tables for

I'd rather have 1 solid product than 2 dozen cancelled products which can no longer be used.

I think Apple is one of the few companies that tries to maintain a level of focus that Google simply does not have. Just compare the number of cancelled Google products/services vs Apple.

It looks like the search results got better in the last couple of months. Back in the fall when I was searching for "2TB SSD" the results were completely awful and included things like HDDs (why?!?). Trying the same search today

Yes, it's getting worse. I inadvertently deleted a bunch of information manually collected out in the field last week from Notes on my iPhone. What was my mistake? Apparently I reached into my pocket and somehow managed to unlock my

But Xilinx has the absolute worst SERDES interface. Microsemi's Polarfire was way easier to get 10G ethernet up and running on (hours vs weeks).

Server BIOS is just very poorly written. It never gets the boot time optimizations that desktops get. At a former employer, every time we got a new generation of Intel dual socket server boards, the bugs that we had to get fixed in the pre

The big challenge for electrification is how to cope with energy demands of commercial vehicles. The Tesla semi needs 1MW for the fast charge. Yes -- that's 1000A at 1000VDC going into a single truck, which is a lot of power! Simult

A good work environment will see only good from developers asking each other questions to gain a better understanding of the complex systems being worked on. I was pretty senior in one of my last few roles, and I regularly asked questions

Linux Weekly News ended up with this kind of model. A long time ago back in 2002, LWN was about to shut down, but those of us in the Linux community found it had tremendous value and asked for options to pay, as well as options to pay more

Musk is/was distracted by the ongoing Twitter fiasco. How a single person can run 3 massive companies simultaneously without things going sideways is beyond me. He needs to decide where his focus is best spent.

Except for the trade war when tariffs were slapped on DRAM imports from Japan because of dumping. The prices listed in the ads by Jameco and other companies in the back of Byte tell some interesting stories.

Bandwidth costs way less than $0.003/GB. Even cheaper for Netflix because ISPs are willing to host cache servers for free.

DNS over TCP is fine, and I'd far prefer it to be the default over UDP, as any packet loss with DNS over UDP results in rather lengthy timeouts (typically >1 second). DNS over TCP fixes that (or at least reduces the delay to RTT)
