When he talks about Verilog, he is referring to the language used for development and implementation. We're talking about a different part of the chain, something akin to the compiler, make, cmake and alike. Of course, there's som

Windows only tools? You must have been using Altera options (I briefly maintained the page for Quartus compatibility at wine, circa 2004). Even them have had Linux support for a while, Xilinx has Linux support for as far as I remember, at l

The site was not that bad a few years ago, but I guess this new structure sells better for some companies. At the time, I actually bought the book and I liked it. It was a bit dense in the beginning, and I skipped the example, but I had som

Very nice! Anything that allows something more sophisticated than switch:case in embedded systems are welcome! Also, state machines are way too often overlooked as a proper model for embedded systems architecture. My guess is that proper im

Hey, thank you for that. I really needed this motivation at this point in my life as an EE (RF, RTL and PCB level).

The FPGA architecture is not the problem here. This Chips thing works on another level of abstraction: it will generate a small RISC CPU and run the interpreter it compiles. So, maybe I can try to port http://armpit.sourceforge.n

I'm not sure if I have the software skills for that (my compilers course is still pending in Coursera), but will try to do it! However, I would not raise my expectations that much.

I agree with you: it pays to be skeptical of these high level design flows. I'm wary of HLS even from established vendors. However, if it targets FPGA, and not ASICs, maybe the reset omission is on purpose. FPGA guarantees initializati

Very interesting. Please take note that this is not your usual transpiler such as MyHDL or Migen: "Behind the scenes, Chips uses some novel techniques to generate compact and efficient logic - a hybrid of software and hardware. Not onl

Is there any fundamental reason why no tool offers a federated alternative to GitHub? I mean, the distributed nature of git is ripe for federation, but why aren't issues, releases and pull requests federated? Maybe even some deeper in

A honest question from a hardware guy: Why isn't the password hashed and salted client-side, with the salt being sent from server to client? I understand that hashing in the client side would only substitute the user password for a new

Interesting. I'm a bit removed from DSPs for some time, I wonder which multi-core processors AD are talking about. Are these just common ARM and the like or do they have some new architecture in the pipeline I haven't heard about?

I am mildly surprised that Blackfin support has been dropped. A few years ago, many digital cameras had a Blackfin for both GUI and DSP. I remember working with SHARC (harvard-architecture CPU from Analog Devices) and seeing the main advant

May not be the best place to ask, but I'll give a try: is this salary range in SV only for software (web and mobile)? Is there any chance an electronics, RF or DSP/FPGA engineer to reach these values? Asking for a friend...

No, Signal Desktop is NOT the same as WhatsApp web. You still need your phone for the initial setup (same as Telegram), but after that, the desktop app is untethered until de-authentication. Also, it has a much more praised security and cry

Well, that goes for Android - if your passcode is locked, you may always re-authenticate using your full Google Account password. Quite surprised this is not the way for iOS devices.
