Gov.uk is _the_ primary way that anyone interacts with the UK government. Why shouldn't it be one of the highest priority aspects of government? I don't think the Prime Minister was sitting in on daily standups and sprint planning

Derek Lowe is rightfully pointing out that protein structures (AlphaFold's main purpose) is not the rate limiting step in drug discovery today. Other articles overhype AlphaFold's achievements and this one pours water on that, a n

The relentless number of anti-crypto and anti-web3 articles on HN is tiring. Nobody is forcing anyone to partake in this new technology. Skepticism is healthy, but criticism without being constructive is not. There are clearly _some_ novel

How can you honestly say the "let a thousand flowers bloom" approach failed? Google scraps a lot of products, but they still have many great products: Gmail/GSuite, Android, YouTube, GCP, Nest... Each of those is a successful

How would the world react if there was a Chinese company that was launching an equivalent number of satellites as Starlink? I except the discussions would be very different, and there would be many more calls to stop SpaceX/Starlink.

I work on ML recommendation algos for a big Facebook-sized company, so perhaps I can give some insight on how this model could be used. This is an example and might not resemble anything they're doing internally. This is more ELI16: Fa

Are there any sources or predictions on how Paxlovid production and availability will scale? I'm specifically wondering when (if ever) Paxlovid will be widely available and begin to have an impact on COVID hospitalization.

Everything in society that can be criticized, will be criticized by a subgroup. Even still, I don't think Big Pharma gets enough credit for the multiple vaccines and treatments developed over the last two years.

This is an interesting thesis. How would HR/People/Recruitment teams work effectively in a world where there are many specialized and actively used job boards? Today, HR teams usually post jobs on LinkedIn and perhaps one or two m

I agree with you. I can understand why a theoretical physicist would find this format frustrating to read. For a layman, the forced tempo of threads helps me understand each point before I move on.

My point (a view shared by the article and many others) is that the FDA decided Aduhelm is safe but did a terrible job of deciding that it is effective. Safety is also not absolute. All medicines have adverse effects, safety is then relativ

Free-market folks could argue: what's the point of the FDA here? The organizations that bear the cost of the medicine have decided that there isn't enough evidence of benefit from Aduhelm and further clinical evidence is required.

The study really doesn't suggest that. All it suggests is that EBV seropositive people are much more likely to develop MS than the seronegative minor population. As for long COVID, the data quality is very variable. I'd like to se

That's an example of a bad use of chatbots, but I don't think that means all chatbots are a bad interface. Chat is good when you have a large potential problem space and a wide range in the tech abilities of your users. A 90 year

Yes, I'm basing this on experience. A non-savvy user sees most modern UIs as overwhelming, difficult to navigate and they don't have the same priors that the average HN reader does. When they see a chat pop-up, they see a familiar

This is a great finding. If I were on one of the teams developing an EBV vaccine (e.g. Moderna) I would be a little worried about the possible knock-on effects of the vaccine as a result of this study. MS is an auto-immune disorder, so it&#

Is it not unfair to expect GPT-3 to perfectly tackle this issue when it has been trained as a general purpose model? For customer support or other more specific chatbot applications there are better machine learning models.

I see this opinion come up on HN frequently. You are not the intended target for a chatbot. You're right; for most tech-savvy users, the ideal interaction would be through a well designed UI. However, there's a significant portion

This isn't true for the field of biology or medicine. If you take a look at the order of authors on the paper in question you can also see that the ordering is not alphabetical.

Impressive if true, although I am very sceptical of the results. The real test is to put their neck on the line and predict/warn of the next significant variant. If the authors are not willing to do this, I doubt that the algorithm is

There’s a fixation on this “pointer” problem with NFTs. Most projects use IPFS, making this a non-issue. There are plenty of other critiques of NFTs - this is not one of them.
