I've always thought it should be illegal or heavily disincentivized to create such throw away products, but have never figured out a good way to actually measure this. No company is going to admit to creating junk.

Thanks for the link. I didn't mean to undermine the story here, it's just been building frustration today and finally one I really want/need to read and blocked again.

Absolutely! Even ignoring all the stimulus money and tax breaks probably given, municipalities all over the US are building out their own fiber that is blowing the others away in performance and even price usually.

I feel like this is some form of Stockholm Syndrome. You shouldn't pay more. You should be getting better speeds for the same or lesser price. Technology is advancing and the carriers are purposely holding us back, for exactly the r

I agree. I only have ever had one person correct me on this, who was, incidentally, Canadian. It's rather infuriating because the Latin name is literally 'from Canada'...which we already have a term for(Canadian). If anyth

I really can't wait til we have some sort of wifi everywhere, and choice. I currently do use a sim, but it's data only. I haven't used 'cell voice' nor text messaging in a long time. That said, I still need the d

I know you jest, but you know who it did work for, in a way? AOL. AOL used to have its own content, its own email, own groups, own chat, and own keywords. People made fun of AOL as 'newbie' at the time, but I think given proper

I used to dream of switching out roots and making a new internet, but that seems like it'd never work. What about a TLD instead, with the simple tenent that no advertising or tracking was allowed, ever? Doing so would get your domain

This seems like a good start. I've often wondered why someone hasn't recreated something akin to a modern VB6. Allow users to drag/drop things, add some glue code in some intermediate language, and output to Android, IOS, o

Agreed. As a kid, I once picked a gaming name that was unbeknownst to me a Dutch word. So many other kids would join and start speaking what I presume to be Dutch, and when I said I'm American they'd have a laugh and speak in pe

Interesting math. Where does it come from if not income? Corporate taxes? Sales/fuel taxes?

That's the outlier, though. Most states tend to hover in the 5% range. A few states have 0 income tax, but typically make up for it with property tax. But nowhere close to the Federal tax rate...

No, at least not universally. My cousins growing up were all homeschooled, and all creepy to be around. One basically never grew up despite pushing 30, another went off to college and OD'd the first week. The other two are nice peop

I never understand things like this. Barclays is one of the biggest financial institutions in the world. It would likely have been way cheaper, easier, and faster to just give the man his money, and even throw a few thousand at the mistak

Yep, all checkouts. But I know what you're talking about, the Meijer in my old town was setup that way. And I agree about Home Depot, that system, while imperfect, is pretty great. No more having to lift heavy awkward items over a sm

I don't necessarily want that, but if every other company is sitting on their hands, it's their loss. Walmart is the absolute worst. They have the size, money, and a decent tech team, but the checkout experience still sucks. At

We have that too in USA of course, but self checkout is not at all helpful to either issue. In my experience, it takes longer than a cashier for anything more than a few items. Amazon was supposedly working on a grab and go type system, t

This only works with low cost items, and/or in nice areas. In low income areas, even many fully manned stores bail due to shrinkage. I'd like to see a middle ground, personally. I like the idea of grabbing and going, using som

It's a hard reality to face. Houses are supposed to not be seen as investments, but realistically are. What happens when your 500k investment is unsellable overnight? On one hand, logic tells us to help displaced folks. On the other
