Sorry what I meant is I've been working on the open source Micro project for 8 years which underpins this. The chat app itself was not really something I meant as being open source but yes it's in a separate repo with the API host

Yes this is a proof of concept. I'm just trying to figure out what the core features should be and whether other people will be interested too. It can potentially be self hosted but it's quite a complex stack at the moment. There&

Will take that on board. Does it matter where the code is? Doesn't seem like people care about Notions source code.

Struggled a lot. I grew up amongst an extended family of relatives. It was my community. Then I moved away. I also grew up on the internet and spent a lot of time moving between communities there. I am trying to rebuild some of they now ht

Sendgrid has an inbound email webhook which I've used quite effectively. What's great is that you can dynamically map your inboxes and provide any address for your domain. https://docs.sendgrid.com/for-developers&#

This. So you're highlighting what I feel and see. The need to manage small groups in a singular way. Maybe that's not even worth it but it's all spread across different platforms. I don't really know if a bridge for them

I wouldn't say that's the goal. Most of these platforms are VC owned with the goal of growth. Meaning a lot of public usage. Not my goal.

Thanks for sharing. Having seen that. I started writing a manifesto with similar sentiment but realised it's really hard to attract the attention needed to get it off the ground. If it's of interest https://mu.xyz/

I think discord works well but at the same time isn't for my generation. I was reluctant to adopt slack and used it for work/oss community building but found it just wasn't a fit for me. I'm still someone who enjoys emai

That's sort of a random comment. Email came from a need and turned into global digital identify. Web forums became a place for internet conversations. Any iterations we made were for public real time communication and that served us we

Group sizes would be limited to 20 people. Multiple topics/threads per group. No notifications. must know a users emails to invite them.

Tbh it's about as useful as the trending page is. Which is not very useful. These things could be so much better but GitHub is just copycatting at this point. It used to be a leader in great UX.

I don't have Facebook. That went like 10 years ago. I still have twitter but deleted an account with 3k followers and returned to follow just the things I care about quietly. Still that scrolling behaviour gets me. My consumption is dr

I hate social media with a passion. In 2000 using msn, yahoo messenger and chat rooms was a joy. Browsing the web was such fun, exploring and finding new information and websites. In 2005 MySpace became all the rage and something shifted.

That makes sense. It's quite easily doable but you need sort of a programmatic mailbox. I don't think it necessarily needs to be direct to email but email as identity. Most people still use a well known hosting provider for email.

Is it even email? It's just messages right. You want messages to be sent directly to you.

Charge for it. Simply charge each user $1 and cover your costs. Sounds like it's a fun tool but if you want to sustain it then get people to pay.

Nice, thanks for sharing! I'm sort of interested in what the tech could enable if it's invisibly deployed and used within an app.

TIL the complexity of VPN is still higher than my desire to self host. I've run OpenVPN in very complex configurations across multiple datacenters for companies, I've worked on distributed systems and networking tech for decades b

It's not clear that regular people care about where software is hosted. If anything it's just far more convenient that you don't have to deal with anything. Did anyone care how secure zoom was? Not really. Just pure convenien

This is the thing. WhatsApp works really well. And so did Facebook groups. I think once communities are established they stay where they are. So anything new is for new usecases. Trying to get people to migrate isn't the answer. It

The irony. HN is probably one of the few places left I feel like actually every so often leaving a comment. Why is that? The value of the network perhaps. Or that it does in some ways feel like a closed network. It's so niche, the self
