You're right about that; you are only free to change your job for a "similar" position elsewhere.

About the risk taking, I spoke for myself and not for anyone else. Life is not a bed of roses, I've accepted that. When I got my H1B visa, I was aware of all the risks it involves. I've said this in previous posts as well, nobody

IMO first fix the hiring process for engineers. Asking someone to implement a splay tree, B+ Tree and other obscure algorithms (which is usually Googled 15 mins before the interview or is a pet interview question) in 45 mins is pointless. I

Whether we like it or not, English is the defacto "business" language. Most (if not all) places in the world conduct business in their native languages(s) and English. So why would I want to learn Mandarin, which I've been to

I find it hard to understand why people "expect" perfection from code written by humans. Shit breaks, people make mistakes, deal with it. Is anyone in their right minds to expect perfectly written software, while at the same time

Funny thing, I was having this discussion with my friends at a dinner party to do something on our own (a non-tech business idea). No cigar... It's so ingrained in a lot of people that having a stable corporate job is the best you can

Totally agree! I fail to understand why is this a 'problem'. FB can do as they please (fail or succeed as a consequence), they aren't a tax payer funded institution answerable to the public at large. In effect, people are dic

I don't think any past or present employees are surprised by this. Cisco has always been a volatile place to work (at least since the dot com bubble) where these layoff rumors start every 4-6 months; and more often than not they do occ

It depends on where you are located? I've found recruiters/HR in silicon valley being cognizant about the fact that titles do not really matter if you are in a startup.

On paper, yes. But this argument has been around for quite a while and we haven't seen any major companies moving operations (ever after the recession). The company I worked for in Austin was a remote location and HQ was in SV. Hardly

Yup, but these aren't "tech" companies. These are traditional manufacturing, finance, insurance (I've heard about State Farm moving to Richardson, TX) etc. Apart from AMD (when it was on the brink) moving it's HQ to

I was in one of the so called "low cost tech hubs" of Dallas/Austin in 2008 during the recession. Anecdotal, but people in tech were doing a lot worse than in SV due to lack of jobs. If you were a reasonably good engineer in

Yes, I'm aware of white flight. It's 2016 and the claim is that America has supposedly moved on, but it surely doesn't look like it. Or no one wants to talk about it since it's embarrassing.

C++ is very hard. IMO, that's why people dislike it. I was writing a test output parser in Python: ~50 lines of functional code in less than an hour. Testing the script for about 10-20 mins and tweaking it to my liking. The same in C++

As opposed to confronting reality and not being in denial? We have a difference of opinion. I'd rather be told the truth than have someone showing sympathy which is of no use whatsoever.
