You're right. And maybe average number of hours per month is more appropriate. Or lets, say average number of hours per week. Usually the top end goes to 100 when I'm working on some new feature and am completely obsessed with it. However,

I started a site 13 years ago and it is one of the largest sites in it's niche right now. Very very popular. I do work on it many hours a week (can range from 0 to 100 hours/week) but I don't really have to. I just love working on it, addin

When you load up Gmail on a mobile device it does some pretty aggressive browser side caching. Works really well! But file upload is definitely an important reason to have apps. However, the article is talking about reading the news and tho

I think it has more to do with the fact that affluent people from other countries don't do the gap year thing and this is why it's seen as a 'white phenomenon'. I'm brown (from India) and have been traveling full time for the past 1 year wi

Well I don't really understand why everyone jumped on the 'app bandwagon' and spent millions if not billions of dollars developing said apps. If I could have a regular mobile reading experience using my browser, pray tell why I would want t

Thanks! On further thinking about my question I realized that anything at the DB layer (Postgres) will probably be faster than doing it in Python because it's written in C. (re: the json load and dump part of my question..)

Could you tell me the specific advantages that this may have over say, json data in a text field ? Is it faster to: - Convert an array into json and push it into a text field - Retrieve it the same way Or use this ? Also, are there any dist

Question for your JS folks: How are they going to handle document.write calls in third party or even 1st party tags ? Those are blocking by nature and trying to load them up asynchronously will ruin the page. I know there are a few document

Interesting, so as I understand this - it allows 'marketers' to insert javascript code into a website when they want to do something 'new'. (maybe they want to put crazyegg on there, or do something else.. ?) I see where this is trying to h

Pretty interesting post. A lot of this was covered in a book I read a few months ago, one of the best 'motivational' books that I ever came across (because it's scientific) http://www.amazon.co.uk/59-Seconds-Think-little-change/dp/02...

So would you say that the day rate would be the same as an 8 hour slab ? Or would you charge for only 5 hours.. or how does this work ? I'm curious on how to do a fair calculation on this because, to be honest, I do spend a lot of time (tha

It's interesting to see that Linux users ($8.92) on average donate around 40% more than everyone else ($5.36). Also, Windows users are cheaper than Mac users. This is from the average donation amounts on the page.

What prevented you from just caching the status page and then refilling the cache manually every X seconds ? I'm sure a status that is a few seconds old given the system wide meltdown wouldn't have been an unreasonable compromise ?

Nice work! Definitely simplifies stuff. Are you thinking of integrating writecapture [1] for a document.write override option ? Might be a nifty thing to do since a lot of external scripts use that and can block access or worse, clear the D

The article has to do with loading javascript asynchronously and not CSS (title is misleading..). Great article but it fails to mention something important. A lot of 3rd party scripts use document.write. What this means is that even if you

I honestly believe that Grooveshark will never get love from the major record labels. They just pissed them off and the record industry likes to play hardball. I gave them a tech suggestion a few weeks ago for their mobile apps. Obviously t

No, it's probably due to the massive number of reads/writes pumping through their system. I'm pretty sure that their database isn't able to handle what's going on at the moment. Also, if you were to use Varnish as a cache, that wouldn't hel

In all of this the funniest part is that the government/bureaucracy is so uselessly inefficient and corrupt that the very IDs they ask for are meaningless. Case in point, my driving license has my name and address incorrectly written on it.

I think he's just tired of buzzwords and took it out on the wrong title. Now, if he had a post titled "I'll bitchslap the next person who asks me to build something web 2.0". I would totally read that and upvote it to high heaven.
