Not every programmer aspires to write enterprise-level software. Some people like to tinker and try new things. This is exactly what he is advocating. Leave it to the sterile corporate developers to immediately assume all programming is on

From the article: "The new port is backward compatible so it can still be used to connect to DisplayPort devices; however, only the new port can be used to connect to Thunderbolt devices."

I have a current gen MBP with a core i7 and I don't really hear the fans that often, and I'm usually running a lot of stuff at once.

The pragmatist in me realizes I don't need a core i7 to edit text files and run unicorn_rails in the background...but the geek in me punched the pragmatist in the face and said "yes you do".

"Cheating" is a meaningless concept once you reach college in my opinion. Either students are learning or they're not. They're (usually) paying money to be there and the only applicable metric is if the skills they acquire while chasing dow

I'm so tired of sensitive people complaining about everything. We all have our problems, being reminded to "call dad" is not a reason to act like Google showed up to your house and kicked your dog.

Either the other cofounder starts doing something to justify their continued stake in the venture or you reduce their ownership %. Utterly ruthless but this is business. You're already in a precarious position. Don't carry dead weight.

Ok, we get it. Google is "evil". I'd pay $0.05 for every time someone wants to harp on this and DOESNT.

The second you provide context you start providing clues that can be used to piece together the person allegedly responsible for this, and then once that cat is out of the bag it turns into a full blown he-said, she-said thing with legal ra

All communities have some degree of self policing. Those that allow any commentary to go by usually end up embroiled in vitriol and snark. HN strives to keep a specific level of intelligence (to varying degrees of success). As was stated el

Hackers can use whatever they feel is the best platform for their hacking. I personally felt sick to my stomach dishing out the cash for a 15" MBP knowing I could get the same hardware for half the price from Dell, however I want to (eventu

You (and Microsoft) do have a point. Moving from Office to Google Docs really isn't that big of a deal for people that read Hacker News. The bulk of the workforces that use Office are not like that: they're button pushers. As a developer I

I didn't finish my college degree after I got into programming professionally and I honestly am disappointed I didn't. I can write software but I feel a lot of times I know how things go together the way they do, but not the why. There are

I agree to a point. All of my regular-use apps (Eclipse, Xcode, Textmate, Chrome, Terminal, Echofon) all start up really quickly. I don't really ever find myself sitting around waiting for things on it.

I was seriously entertaining the idea of getting a top-end MBA earlier this year (refurbed for $200 off) but then the new MBP's came out and I couldn't justify a 13 inch screen and a Core 2 duo when for almost the same price I could have th

Yeah, here in the US "top-shelf" is usually used in the context of alcohol. All of the really good stuff is top-shelf (usually literally) and the well stuff is the garbage in plastic bottles. Keep the really good stuff up high and visible w
