FWIW, my book is 3.something MB. I don't care that much, though most people assume that revenue splits come after costs. It turns out that most/all book contracts give everyone's cuts out of the retail price, then costs. The rest, if any, g

Not sure I get your point. At a higher price, the net would higher, yes. But it is still not and will never be "70%" as advertised by Amazon. The total cost of printing the book or "digital delivery" is taken out of the author's cut. Tradit

I don't normally rise to your mocking/trolling/whatever, jrockway. I am glad you are content with your life and transport choices. In the past, I have never had problems renting cars. I rented one in Mexico the month previous, no problem. B

Spot on, but a minor correction. The 70% (or 60% for print-on-demand) revenue split advertised isn't what it seems. This is how it breaks down in reality: Paperback retail price: $15 Amazon takes 40% of retail : -$6 Amazon charges you fu

Of the top of my head: start off with big up/down buttons. Then show a list of floors. Some people won't notice the second press required, but it's a start. I was confused by those things the first time too.

I had a harsh experience while on vacation recently. In Miami, I was utterly and completely refused a rental car because I didn't have credit history. Never mind that I could buy one of their cars, cash. They didn't want to hear it.

From a person who loves to read, this article is barely coherent. It lists three things that will "kill" bookstores then says Barnes is "only good at two of them". Wha? Only good at two ways of killing yourself? And one of those things that

When I worked at Spock we had pretty much the same policy. Spock mined everything it could, including corporate bios, news articles, phone directories, etc. It wasn't deeply thought out; we just didn't have time to work it out fully. There

Surprisingly it's hard to track down. The Wiki article linked abode has one or two mentions of a "Mexico incident", but that's it. Here are some others: http://www.nytimes.com/1984/05/01/science/nuclear-spill-at-j...

There was another incident 25-odd years ago near where I grew up on the US/Mexico border. Radioactive steel (with cesium or cobalt, from medical equipment, IIRC) was sold for scrap and turned into various things like restaurant tables. It w

No, you're right. The first chapter is allegory. Lauren is literally attacked by the Jargon. You're not supposed to understand all those words. They are Jargon. :) Not much learning happens in chapter 0 but it sets up the rest of the story.

What about it gives you pause? The goal isn't to teach programming per se, but to have fun with some of the really interesting ideas and habits of mind that go along with programming. And to sneak in a lot of bad jokes. Do you have or know

I get what you're saying and I'm sorry if I was snarky. On the subject of politeness, I myself don't enjoy reading posts titled "Facebook privacy fuckup" at 5am on a Sunday. Please also remember that not every report actually pans out. I ca

Fair enough, I won't quibble. In the absence of a bug report, and having to do this in public, I'm trying to get what information I can. I'm also trying to respond to the author's claims about private investigators, etc.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. Were you reporting bugs (eg X doesn't work), or a security vulnerability? Where did you report?

If you are truly concerned about harm to users, did you try reporting this to facebook.com/security or facebook.com/whitehat? FWIW, I've alerted some people. Your post is unclear on one point. Did you see this screen BEFORE confirming via S

Good point. I am going off of the original algo by von Neumann, which throws away both flips if you get HH or TT. There are many others, and I don't see any reason against your optimization, if the flips are truly independent. http://www.f

50/50 is a special case. You don't need to use the von Neumann extractor. This algo is for sources of randomness that you suspect have a bias. But if you did use this algo on a 50/50 coin, half the time you'll get an HH or TT and have to st

I submitted an article, two actually. Peter gave extensive feedback and went over it in person with me on his own time. He was looking at first for quite long (20k) pieces, which was beyond my ability and depth of knowledge. At the time I w
