It was a good effort, Peter, and fwiw your advice caused me to step up my game. You're a good editor and I'm sure the next thing will be big. Good luck!

Credit should go to the Google "IW10" team, which did the hard work of testing this over years and (even harder) patiently convincing people one by one that this is a good idea. I caution against fiddling with this number too much. Bandwidt

This is interesting but as a general rule I'd advise against giving a third-party, non-HTTPS, obfuscated Javascript the ability to rummage around inside your Facebook session.

I loved that book but you're right. The punny names for things were too cute and did not translate well from the German, despite heroic effort. I gather that they are a bit strained even in the original, eg calling a square root a "radish".

Thank you for the response! Some general comments: this book does not try to explain all of computer science. There's already a guy working on that book, and it's taken him 50 years so far. Laurie does learn some programming in the book.

There is no perfect size any more than there is a perfect sized glove, shirt, chair, etc. We programmers have gotten away with ignoring anthropometric variation till now.

You know, I don't know. IIRC some of the larger sites like Wikipedia and WordPress were looking at it. The dev mailing list is pretty quiet. Ah, well.

You are right that I/O is usually the first bottleneck. I assure you that being CPU bound is no picnic, not least because most optimization knowledge and experience out there relates to I/O. :) Even if you are not CPU bound, HipHop is stead

I'm surprised that you didn't mention HipHop, especially if performance is your biggest gripe. It really is the bee's knees and will only get better. I spent a good chunk of my day looking at PHP code and profiling data. Assocs are terrible

I think you're making two good points, and thank you for engaging. 1) The permission model, ie "ask for everything up front" may be broken. A few times I've forgotten that I approved some app or another and was surprised when it pops up. It

Nothing is wrong with having a good product. The question at hand is whether dominance in one market is being used to kill legitimate competition in others. It was the same with Microsoft 15 years ago, though AFAICT Google are nowhere near

The remedies tend to be forced divestiture (eg, Google forced to some portion of DoubleClick, I forget which one), full breakup (a la AT&T), or huge fines (as with Intel in Europe). None of those are surgical. The breakup of Ma Bell may
