One thing I've never understood is the FSF opposition to microcode and loadable firmware blobs. You're running proprietary hardware that clearly uses some firmware, what do you get out of insisting that the firmware is burned in a

I did jump the gun a little on posting this here, there's a WWDC session on it that's meant to start at 8AM PDT[1] (about half an hour from now) so hopefully there's a lot more information in that. [1] https://deve

Apple seems to be bundling Wine and a D3D12 translation layer(?) to help game devs bring their titles to macOS. Seems like quite an interesting development to me.

You're not wrong that the RTX 4090 will be much more powerful than an M2 Ultra, but you don't have any idea what you're talking about when you're comparing specs. You might be able to compare the number of CUDA cores to

It can't be though. The kernel itself can't include anything requiring floating point maths, so it needs to be able to permit userspace to unlock any restrictions in order for those calculations to happen there. And Asahi is inten

I believe it is essentially to replicate macOS behaviour. Part of the reason MacBooks have great audio is because instead of setting a hard volume limit they model the coil temperatures and modify limits on the fly. That’s something which i

I just created a second user on my MacBook, enabled the built-in VNC server, switched back to the first user, and was able to access the second user's desktop remotely with a VNC client on Windows while the MacBook itself displayed the

My bad - I noticed that the screen becomes brighter than it is possible to manually set it to when it's in harsh sunlight, so I assumed that this was a result of it increasing the SDR brightness limit past 500 nits, I didn't know
