Don't take this so lightly. I've seen a lot of brilliant engineers, especially new CS grads, get stuck in this hole. They have the intelligence and knowledge to "correctly" solve problems, and are driven to always to get them right the firs

The poll measures first startups, not all startups. Since successful founders have often started less successful ventures previously, the data makes more sense than you'd think.

We're actually doing well with this model using a couple techniques to reduce the all-consuming tendency of contracting: * Contracting stays at 50% of our hours (or less.) * Contracting is always hourly. Any overtime or extra hours mean 1:1

Simply calculating stars using a weighted average would help this particular case. If ratings for previous versions counted for half as much as ratings for the current version, users would get a better sense from the overall rating. That sa

For sure. I've seen 30 done effectively, and I've seen 49,000 done effectively, relatively speaking. Still, from the CEO's perspective there's something fundamentally different about managing front-line workers and managing managers.

I think with some effort you can probably get to 30-40-50 people and still run it "with very few mistakes or bad behaviors." No. The reason 10 people can work like magic is that they all report to you. There are no middle managers, just p

It's the same as weeding out programmers by starting with the FizzBuzz question. For it to be worthwhile, you need to be interviewing a lot of potential candidates.

Well, Apple did exactly the same thing with iOS. iOS 3.2 was a tablet-only branch that didn't merge with the phone branch until iOS 4.2.

This is a good analogy, but it misses the very important bonus that a profitable doughnut vendor is also in a good place to fund the development of the uber-nut.

There used to be Hacker News meetup in Vancouver, but it died a year or two ago. That said, other types of meetups here have been quite successful. I started VanJS in 2009 and we get 50-80 attendees nowadays. Feel free to organize a new one

I got a good job once by offering to trade 5 hours a week of work for desk space to (ostensibly) work on contracting. Within a couple weeks they were paying me full time. This is probably a better approach than offering half time for free.

I never understood this. I always thought that you'd rather buy from someone who is likely to go out of their way to serve your needs than to buy from someone who simply doesn't care. I think the biggest factor is trust. If the salesperso

This was true until iBooks came out. Keep in mind that a 70% cut for the publisher for books is better than most authors traditionally get. Meanwhile, record labels' cuts are usually more than 90%.

Indeed - it only helps for services that target many "normal" people. For B2B and prosumer services with a high cost per subscriber, you're a lot less likely to get a 30% boost in sales.
