What does encryption even have to do with COVID? All the disinformation I see is cleartext on social media.

I think there is enough evidence to suggest the possibility of a human role, but given the fact that a much more virulent virus could easily have been made I think if there was a human role it was an accident. That and the fact that this ha

Excluding really obvious things like ethnic cleansing or aggressive war, it's hard to find any policy or practice in the realm of politics that is all good, all bad, perfectly effective, etc. You can almost always find counterexa

What about the USSR in the 1950s? I understand that by the 1980s it was a basketcase, but there was a time when it at least seemed to be the most rapidly advancing nation.

I see amazing naivete whenever this topic comes up. People need to think of it this way: there are people who will kill you for the cash in your wallet.

Feel free to suggest one. Even things like Patreon likely would not work without copyright, as people would just steal the work and republish it on another medium. Open source business models couldn't work without copyright, and there

I really miss the thoughtfulness of human-computer interfaces of the 1980s and 1990s. Serious amounts of thought and in many cases actual research was put into designing computer interfaces to maximize productivity and (get this) minimiz

There's a lot of much lower hanging fruit. As you state: there is no reason the source has to be parsed from scratch every single time. A little memo-ization of intermediate data structures when the underlying source has not changed co

Housing is reflecting growth in the money supply. All that QE is causing inflation, but the inflation is not uniform. It shows up in assets like real estate, gold and other precious metals, the stock market, and of course speculative bubble

Those are innovative fields. The US has a clear lead in aerospace and is among the leaders in materials. We've lost our lead in chips not to China but to Taiwan, a comparatively more liberal Asian country. The gap is not huge (yet) so

I also wonder if they're pushing this for lock-in reasons. If they make everyone architect in this way then people need more load balancers, NAT gateways, firewalls, and other complexity, and they charge for all that.

AWS supports IPv6 almost everywhere. Azure has some support but requires IPv6 NAT for some mysterious reason. Most of the smaller cloud/VPS providers support it: Digital Ocean, Vultr, Linode, OVH, Packet.net, and so on.

Microsoft sells to a lot of crusty enterprises, and I bet a lot of the IT folks there think NAT is for security and refused to use IPv6 if it wasn't NATed. They probably deployed it that way to placate that particular piece of brain de

The idea that NAT is in any way related to security needs so badly to die. You don't need NAT for a firewall or access control. NAT is a hack to stretch IPv4 and that's it. Nearly all security intrusions today are "pulled&quo
