Yeah I read some of that stuff, like some of "the sequences," and I have never been impressed by it. It's very weirdly dogmatic and full of magical thinking. I still can't believe anyone ever took Roko's Basilisk

I assume those are non-batched. I think the M series GPU can do 4X to 8X depending on model quant, which means if you can batch queries you'll get almost 4X to 8X performance.

I'm deeply skeptical of AI doomer stuff, but I've been struggling to exactly articulate why. I can think of it in my brain and can try to explain but so far none of my explanations have seemed fully coherent to me. I studied bio

The more you know about a subject the better you can prompt AI, steer it toward the correct path, and recognize when it hallucinates or strays. Current generation AI is an automated memory-enhancement and thinking-accelerator tool, not a su

They're pretty basic and hallucinate a lot. There are some hard limits to how good you can get on a model that fits on a phone. Qwen3 and Gemma level models that run on mid-high end laptops and desktops can be pretty good. Not frontier

This is the test. If the speech that's easiest to dislike is legal, then we all have free speech. IMO math is free speech, and outlawing math is censorship.

> Math has built a gated, inaccessible institution which - by design or not - served as a moat. This has always been my problem with math going all the way back to college. It was obvious to me that the concepts were far less hard than t

Only way to justify those valuation is if they can achieve regulatory capture and outlaw competitors and open models. Expect the fear mongering to escalate to a fever pitch. The UN has no authority to ban anything but it's a good platf

Another interesting one is the black hole electron: the electron as a stable micro black hole, possibly super-extremal. Probably not, but apparently some of the math does work. There's been some attempts to model all particles as micro

Try bringing up Scientology in Hollywood. I think you can now but there was a time when saying anything bad about that cult would get you blackballed from the industry. It’s still powerful.

There’s more overlap between those camps than many would want to admit. Neoreaction, “HBD,” and similar movements emerged from some of the same forums. I consider them at least adjacent. It’s not that I think AI is all upside. We were naive

I wonder: was there a time when using a compiler was considered cheating? "Real men" code everything in ASM! I do recall a whole era when using a GUI was considered cheating and denigrated as a "point and drool" interfac

I would say Rust is a functional language that has been hammered into the shape of C++. It also draws heavily on ML. I get why, and it makes it a better fit for its obvious “C++ reimagined, cleaner, and better” niche.

X64 does have a stronger SIMD story, but this is partly compensated for by the fact that ARM64 is much easier to decode wide. M series has a very wide decoder and a lot of instruction level parallelism. It can turn chunks of those 128-bit S

Tech tended to be blue and seen as an ally of at least liberal/center-left politicians until the mid-20-teens, and my memory is that it was tech that shifted way to the right and it was after that occurred that the left started its t

I’m curious if someone can truthfully explain this. What’s the main motivation for all the money being thrown at R’s from these and other high up tech people? What I want is specific reasons not the usual Reddit “they’re rich therefore evil

The same point was made by many in the music industry about huge scale Internet music piracy vs people dubbing CDs onto mixtapes. Everyone laughed at them and rolled their eyes or called them greedy even though we now know that mass piracy

IMO if they didn’t have proper licensing to train on the data the model should not be copyrightable. In the long term though I think models have no moat, so the cost will fall to the cost of compute and storage. Which is why they’re pushing

I call SF and Silicon Valley “the world’s only slum for the rich.” What buys you a trap house or an apartment with hallways that smell like piss in SF or the Valley will buy you a mansion in 90% of the country at least.

They really do this. They give subsidies to people to be able to afford homes when there’s insufficient supply. Huge surprise: it makes prices go up. More money chasing the same goods. We will do literally anything to fix housing shortages

I always sound YIMBY but yes, that’s another part of it. The economy has hyper-concentrated in a small number of cities and regions. Telework has helped a little bit to reverse it, but it’s nowhere near enough and it only works for some ind

There is a middle ground. This kind of fatalism makes people not want to try. I think we have made political office and running for it so insanely adversarial and toxic that only three kinds of people will dare sign up for it: narcissists,
