Bad on me for sending this to Loren. I honestly didn't even read the whole thing... I was like "oh here is an email from the dude who got extorted cool... " I actually didn't think it was that big of deal. Never email something you're not

It certainly limits it from being useful if you don't have dollars to throw at high-end infrastructure, but it's not quite as terrible as it sounds. Effectively all it means is that you can't cold start it. How big a problem this is depends

I don't think appliance computing institutes a disconnect between what hackers and non-hackers compute on. I actually think the opposite is true but that the tools aren't here just yet to support that conjecture.

Scalaris ( http://code.google.com/p/scalaris/ ) is consistent and has transactions. As an aside, three sentences doesn't really warrant a "tl;dr".

I'm not clear on what the relevance of your comment is. To quickly recap — I'm contrasting what Picurio offers via a plugin for Safari against what's available in all the browsers on my machine today; which includes Flash based uploaders th

The experience when you're trying to upload a dozen or a hundred photos is obviously different. How so? In my experience when I have needed to upload multiple files the website has presented a Flash based uploader that really only differs

At the moment I plug in my camera, iPhoto opens, I click 'Import All', go back to my browser click Browse, click Media, click iPhoto, click 'Last Import' and click the photo I'm after. Whilst you are saving a few clicks out of that routine,

If you read all the way through you'll note that he sees money as a form of validation. Hence money is not his primary motivation, but rather a method for substantiating his value.

Andrew's primary motivation isn't making cash. I don't see the connection between charging for media and a "slippery slope" - what are you referring to? If anything, isn't it better that he charge since then he's unlikely to need advertiser

There is no problem with selling themes. What may be a problem is distributing a theme under another license. I think it's unlikely they'll do anything about this as legal action would be detrimental to their community; meaning that thi

To expand on your comment - Matt Mullenweg is often quick to point out that WordPress itself came into being by forking a GPL'd abandonware project. It's because of this that I think he genuinely wants to ensure users of the software have t

Describing the arbiter's role as being to "decide who's the master" is an over-simplification. It's there to achieve quorum without which conflicting updates can occur.

I think the arbiter is quite relevant since a split-brain makes durability impossible.

I think http://0install.net is a better solution as it handles updates and works on multiple platforms. Regardless, unless a couple of major distributions support one of these alternative install systems they're ultimately a futile effort

Such an arbitrator is not really useful for the replica pairs as these are self-managing the master-slave status. From the Mongo documentation: The arbiter is used in some situations to determine which side of a pair is master. In the ev

If it was for the later, I think Wide-Area Bonjour (DNS-SD) is a good substitute. Bonjour handles port-forwarding via NAT-PMP or uPnP as well service discovery. I have a bias or two though (see profile).

Oh, I thought it was middle of the range like Internode. The equivalent of Xs4all in Australia would be Telstra who's ADSL services start at 1.5M with 2gb (upload/download) for $39.95; additional usage charged at 15¢/MB and capped at an exc

The users by nationality statistics are interesting. Australia has a population of about 21 million whilst the Netherlands has about 17 million, and yet the former doesn't rate a mention whilst the later does — why? My theory - bandwidth:

For Nokia, I don't think it's anything to do with Android (in the narrow sense) and is about far more than Intel's money. It seems to me that some years back Nokia took the view that phones are just another computing platform. Taking this v

I'm not sure that the people still on the PPC architecture are worth targeting. It's been 4 years since Apple switched to Intel. If their hardware needs haven't evolved in that time then I'd assume their software needs haven't changed eithe

Sorry I missed your response. Many years ago I used Nokia 5110 and 6210 phones to do this. All that was needed was a serial cable, a list of the relevant AT commands and some Perl. Google should be able to fill in the gaps on how to do this
