If you turn on file versioning in S3, then you'll be able to get to the data that was "overwritten". I don't think there's a way for someone with only PUT access to work around this.

Is there a way for me to get access to a machine like this if I want to see how well my code runs? If I want to benchmark some code on a crazy i7, I can just fire up an instance on EC2 for a couple of hours. I'm not aware of anything like t

The "PNG crunch" programs out there - eg OptiPNG - actually do a bit more work. They'll try palette-ising a truecolor image, applying all the PNG filters ( http://www.w3.org/TR/PNG-Filters.html ), etc. They also tend to use forked versions

Yeah but the point here is to produce a .gz file which is compatible with standard tools like gunzip, PNG decoders, your browser's handling of "Content-Encoding: gzip", etc. If you control the compressor and decompressor then applying new t

Lots of Australian ISPs route to Asia via the US. So it's a coinflip as to whether any particular customer will see much better pings, or much worse pings, if you host in Singapore/Tokyo.

EDIT: Awww.. Rackspace's support chat person tells me they don't do cloud hosting in Australia. The cloud links on rackspace.com.au subtly point to the US site and US pricing. And the only way to get their non-cloud pricing for AU is for a

Looks like about a 30% price premium over EC2 instances in North America. 60% for traffic. Which isn't so bad at all compared with other local options. I think this will become the default hosting choice for a lot of Aussies. IMO nobody's c

I can think of many things that could qualify at "internal tools." The question is broad and the answers depend on what your business is, who works there, and what they do (yourself included!) Possible "internal tools" that come to mind are

Question for HNers from NYC: when would be a good time to visit? I was planning to spend November there (hostels and/or airbnb) but put that off when the hurricane hit. All the official tourism sites are saying "business as usual" but that

The Tokyo DC isn't a universal win for Australia. The results are actually pretty bimodal depending on your ISP. From Perth, iiNet routes directly to Asia, and it's a big win. But Amnet routes AU -> US -> Asia and it's a big loss. I

Storylane appears to be a hosted blogging platform that doesn't offer RSS feeds. Not sure if they're just desperate to get people joined up, or RSS is actually dead.

Windows 7 32-bit (not 64-bit) still includes the DOS API implementation descended from the original in Windows NT. Open up cmd.exe. Now run "edit". That's a 16-bit DOS program. You won't be able to find it in the Windows task manager - it's

If you can't ship an MS-DOS "format /S" image, there are several DOS clones available under open source licenses (freedos, rxdos, ...) and lots of proprietary ones targeted at the embedded market too (rom-dos, pts-dos, dr-dos, ...). You mig

IMO, if conversion rates are a concern, the need to download a separate runtime first makes Java, newer versions of .NET, etc non-starters. Note that Adobe AIR doesn't require this anymore: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/articles/air3-ins

Leave more than one screenful of scrollback in the buffer after your program exits, like a well-behaved command-line app should. If you hate this, you can tweak your terminal definition so curses apps don't do it. http://fixlog.blogspot.

A connection is uniquely identified by (IP #1, Port #1) and (IP #2, Port #2). You can have 65535 connections (in theory) from a single client to your port 80. And another 65535 from a different client to port 80 on the same server. If you'r

I'm thinking of the build order - a list of things built, and the supply at which they were built - like the one in the comment at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQe6UqvCOT4 Something like http://code.google.com/p/phpsc2replay/ will get

As I understand it, all of the "create a build order from the replay" sites/tools out there suffer inaccuracy because a replay file is just a list of input actions. There's no distinguishing between building a probe, queueing a probe, not h
