Amazons own SQS service has a simple solution to this problem. When you get an item from the queue it is temporarily hidden then once you've processed it successfully you explicitly delete the item from the queue. If the item is not deleted

That was my first thought as well. But I guess it depends on how often they need to update things. It might be quite nice to be able to deploy design tweaks in an hour rather than 30. But if this was a one off or very infrequent then I thin

Obviously I skimmed the article far too quickly. Here's the relevant bit: Compare the numbers of gifts for the two banners: #18: 832 gifts, $15073.47 total #22: 301 gifts, $9572.83 total Not close right? But look at the

From a very quick scim of the original blog Wikimedia blog post it looks like the total for #18 was higher (with the same number of impressions). What this suggests to me is that the lower amount shown on the banner made people feel there d

That may be unlikely to be frame-ups hoping to be NYTimesCo's subsidiary. It deserves more expensive to a blackhat SEO strategy. If having spammers link farms pointing at them. This is why Google would be careful when making these situation

I wouldn't get to hung up on being "scabable" if I were you. Just do it and worry about that later if it becomes an issue (which it probably won't, plenty of sites are successful at what they're doing without having to many troubles in this

I'm not sure exactly how you can accidentally include an affiliate tag in a link. That and the rather over hyped title really do make it seem like this was rather deliberate. If I were you I'd either edit the link (if that's possible) or de

I don't think Amazon affiliate links are appropriate for posting to Hacker News. Does anyone else think it's ok to do that? edit: Non-affiliate link: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Ears-Isolating-Earphones-Micr...

Ok, that makes sense. It was just the way he wrote it looked like he was comparing having a special drive letter with having a special folder which didn't make any sense. Being able to use arbitrary folders is indeed a very useful feature.

I don't understand how "You have to remember to put all your files in a special folder" (Dropbox) is much different than "You have to remember to put all your files on a special drive".

Ok, that makes a bit more sense. It's not that no one can be censored, it's just that the power to do so doesn't rest with a small group of admins. That sounds much better, hope it works out!

It is written in JS and it looks like that JS can be edited in the editor and reloaded on the fly. That's the core of Emacs I think, being able to recode the editor on the fly. I haven't actually tried that with YMacs so I don't know how we

Maybe there are people who found the article interesting and worth sharing but did not have anything original to add to the discussion. That doesn't seem too far fetched to me....

Let bindings create a new local scope. It's only in the GHCi prompt that they apply "from this point on". It is possible to do a more global redefinition but as far as I know you'd have to suppress the Standard Prelude which would mean you

It can be, among other things. I'm just experimenting with it now by writing a literate PIC Assembly program in it. I've got circuit diagrams in DITAA, textual design stuff and the ASM source itself all in one file. So far so good...
