Traditionally those letting houses owned the houses outright - the mortgage was paid off. "Buy-to-let" has changed this but perhaps that is not a good model.

Why is it indefensible? Surely what matters is what they do with the data - if it's being used to improve their products and services then why is it bad? Are there concrete examples of where they have abused this data?

I didn't because the chance of getting a permanent academic position is incredibly small and the pay and conditions are also poor.

Didn't living conditions actually worsen for a while after the industrial revolution though due to rapid urbanisation and slums and a lack of workers rights. Being a peasant was awful too, mind.

France had other issues though (iirc the employee protections are really strong so it discourages hiring in case you get a bad hire). The problem is that it's virtually impossible to do a controlled experiment.

I'd say the passionate people would be those working away for years on the hardware, the software, the UI that made the ipod and iPhone possible and successful rather than the guy who put on a turtleneck and sold it to the world.

Yeah but you can make all the PSAs and laws you like and some people will still drink and drive. That's not a concern with a robot car.

Big companies are just successful small companies. IBM, Bell Labs etc. did far more innovation than any Mom and Pop shop.

I mean the speed of light limitations were known to physics since the 1920's so it was obvious it couldn't continue forever.

The one exam versus continuous assessment is more of a cultural thing. As are the old Oxford terms of Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity which are very short. In decent universities in the UK they still have a one on one tutorial system though

I always find it funny when there are so many articles about how CEOs etc. work like 80+ hours a week. It's very different sitting in meetings and organising the activities of other for 80+ hours a week than it is writing bug-free (or

I would guess 60k euros maybe 80k if you are really good or in some niche or 100k in management. Life is cheaper here, but not that much cheaper. Europe in general is just bad for tech salaries as opposed to the US/Canada though.

I think while technically true its not really the spirit of the saying. Of course free money (from lottery winnings) is better than no money. But for most people it's a choice between more money or a less stressful job, or a shorter co

Yeah - I remember in the 90s loads of people put their religion as Jedi in the UK census. People just like to take the piss.

I moved to Barcelona after finishing University in the UK, the pay is pretty good in multinationals taking into account the cost of living but the rent has been soaring recently. The weather is nice too. I used to live in Edinburgh and that

Perhaps I have missed something as all the streaming services I have are for my personal use - but can't they just limit the number of concurrent connections from a given account? It'd be pretty lame if you had to check if your fr

I find it massively depends on the commute. Previously, I often had to travel to visit my SO which was an hour away by train. As I almost always had a seat I could watch Coursera videos on my phone. However, I have a 20-30 minute bus ride t

Yeah - that seems crazy as surely you would have a very limited number of solutions given manufacturing constraints. So then if a key gets stolen and you have to replace the system it could be literally impossible to do.

I agree but we must also realise the amount of struggle and suffering the current system causes to graduates. In general it's a lot easier to see the flaws of a new proposal than take notice of the problems with the status quo. So doin

I find in STEM that's not such an issue. I mean I studied Physics at a good UK Uni but it isn't like one of the best in the world or anything. Then I did Neuroinformatics at Edinburgh which is really competitive due to their reput

But the current model is that you are just a human resource, little different than the desk you sit at. They don't ask the machines in the factories how the company should be run and thus why would they ask the workers? You are essenti

If we were guided by the needs of practical application we would have devised many ingenious medical probes but never discovered the X-Ray etc. I agree that we should prioritise STEM, but within STEM the research areas should be decided by
