The one exam versus continuous assessment is more of a cultural thing. As are the old Oxford terms of Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity which are very short. In decent universities in the UK they still have a one on one tutorial system though (Oxbridge, Durham, Exeter etc. all had it)
