My current media player is a 3 or 4 year old ACRyan PlayOn Mini, which works wonderfully and has played everything I've ever tried on it. The only downside is that there are some video files which once you start fast-forwarding you can

It was only a matter of time before they added Redis to the mix. Glad to see it happening sooner rather than later though.

Will something like this run OpenELEC? There is a Raspberry Pi build for ARM, but the download page [1] says it's specific to the RP. I saw things like the Xtreamer Ultra but it's way out of my budget. Up to a couple hundred dolla

I first tried perl (and programming in general) back in the mid 90's when I got tired of writing HTML via Word macros and wanted something more interesting. This was perl4 (oraperl to be exact since DBI didn't exist). I haven'

For Australia, the easiest path IMHO is a 457 visa => Permanent Residency after 2 years => citizenship after 1-2 years as a PR. They definitely are pretty generous. I'm working on the paperwork for my PR now.

I'm in the same boat, though I took an intermediate stop in Ireland. It kills me to see the country I grew up in and still love losing its soul. This is most definitely not what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they drafted the Co

I totalled my 2009 VW Golf last year when I hit a guard rail doing about 60kph. The front end was completely smashed, but I walked away with only a little whiplash. Amazingly, the angle was such that neither of the front airbag sensors were

I've been looking forward to reading this. It never fails to amaze me how these sort of incidents are caused by a cascade of small, unrelated problems, any one of which on its own would likely not have caused the end problem. The post-

This issue is one big reason why my attempt at remote working failed. If I had had a basement office, away from the rest of my family, it very well could have worked. But I couldn't get physically enough out of sight to be also mentall

Been there, done that. I've only kissed the Blarney Stone with the safeguards, but it was still pretty freaky leaning down for the kiss. Everyone should do it at least once. :)

The safety issue is not about the government but the level of violence in general society, schools, etc. IMHO, Australia as a whole is a safer place to live than the US right now. You don't hear about people shooting up schools, etc in

I now live very happily in Australia. It's not perfect by any means (nanny state comes to mind), but I feel safer here. More importantly, my wife feels safer.

It's not the America I grew up in, nor the one I want to live in. So I left and have no plans to go back anytime soon. The land of the free isn't so free anymore, which makes me incredibly sad. And my parents live in VA!

Then I guess it's up to the publisher to do the math and see what works out to more profit in the end: keeping prices the same w/ less volume, or dropping the price and (hopefully) increasing the volumn.

It was hinted at in the article, but the publisher sells the book to Amazon for less than the cover price. Of course, I have no idea if Amazon's purchase price is a percentage of the cover. But if it's not (and that's what I

I see we had the same thought! If prices are too high, supply and demand says you should be able to increase demand by dropping the price. Books certainly fall into the elastic demand (or did I get that backwards?) category.

Maybe I'm hopelessly naive, but why don't the publishers drop their prices by 5-10%? Since Amazon is selling books at a percentage of the cover price, dropping the cover price should theoretically offset the decreasing Amazon disc

No kidding! I would routinely get 850+ km from my Golf in city driving on a tank (45-50 L). 1000+ km should be easily possible on the highway. Larger cars would have a little worse economy, but should still be excellent.

Based on my experience driving a late model VW Golf TDi, it is only a matter of time before rising fuel costs push both manufacturers and consumers towards diesels. They are more efficient and all the problems diesels of the 70's have

One thing I've wondered about is why diesel is so much more expensive in the US than Europe (relative speaking)? As you mentioned, there is a LOT consumed by the trucks so it can't be a question of scale. Or even if it is, the US

IIRC it was particulates that have been the primary problem for diesels. With modern engines and exhaust systems, I suspect diesel cars could be a success in the US. For a year I was driving a VW Golf TDi and absolutely loved the car. Fanta
