I don't even know why I'm replying to this, but this sort of reasoning makes my blood boil. A lot of clueless people throw in the "p" word (privatization, or private competition) without really thinking things through. The USPS is based on

Now that's a great idea. Have a card that is limited in certain ways: max purchase of, say, $5 (I don't know if $5 will buy anything in $tarbuck$, since I haven't been there in many years). Limit purchases to coffee (or tea) only. No transf

If the BART police go around calling themselves "police", carrying side-arms and shooting people, they better be under the state. Plus, they have a ".gov" domain name. Despite the Republicans wet dreams, we aren't at the stage (yet) where p

Who cares if it was actively RC or not?!? It's still quite an achievement that the plane could fly autonomously across the Atlantic. Imagine that: in less than 100 years since the Wright Brothers took off, we have a hobbyist autonomous plan

I've been doing the "no-carb diet" (or whatever it's called) for 3 weeks now, combined with some exercise. I've lost 8 pounds so far. There's no "hacking" here; it's just sensible advice. Cut out the beer, the rice, the snacks, etc. Eat mor

A long time ago, there was a startup called Digital Island. They were a small(er) exchange (or is the term "market maker"?), but they handled about 20% of NASDAQ's daily volume. The good thing was, they would let you buy their data post-fac

I've been critical of AirBnB in the past, but I liked the tone of Chesky's post. If only they had done this on June 29, instead a month later. But: it's never too late. I hope this is the penultimate word in this saga (EJ's would be the las

As an ML/AI guy, I'm curious about the problems encountered by HFT systems. What I would love to see is some data, along with the desired outcome. Maybe also include the amount of time available to make the said decision. One could go furth

Are you kidding me, or just trolling? I live in San Francisco. There are tons of people who live _and_ work in San Francisco. From AirBnB's page: "Airbnb HQ is located in the heart of San Francisco, CA."

EJ's incident happened a month ago. The other incident (referenced in GP) happened 2 months ago. So EJ's can not be the "first of its kind". If the quoted comment is true, then AirBnB is lying.

Here is something I don't understand. San Francisco is a tiny city (heck, I've walked from one end to the other; it's just 7 miles x 7 miles, or 11km x 11km for the rest of you). Most of the principles in this sad tale live in San Francisc

I disagree. Giving EJ PG's details, and putting the onus on the victim to reach out to PG, is (IMHO) the kind of attitude that got us here. I think this is what happened with AirBnB too: they probably gave her a number to call "if you need

The solution for AirBnB is (or was...) simple. 1. Make this person whole, at least in terms of material possessions and safety, to the extent possible. And do it FAST 2. Ask them to take down the blog, and replace it with something alon

The solution to that is for AirBNB to offer a compelling value, so that people don't feel the need to bypass them. They can do this by vetting properties, background checks, offering insurance, etc.

It wasn't inadvertent. It was by design. Lets get that straight. If, for example, you're running tcpdump(1) with a packet capture size of 1500 (I don't know if G was doing that, but I'm giving an example), then you can't claim that you capt
