In the thought experiment, do you mean me to transplant the designer’s adversarial intent or only their expertise?

A good summary of the actual contents of the FDA’s report: https://read.whatever.social/elliotswartz/status/15972312726... (Nitter view)

Same here, I’ve simply written them off. The sad thing is the next generation never sees what’s been taken from them, and our absence merely solidifies the new norm.

If you read the FDA’s memo you’ll see they didn’t call it meat. https://www.fda.gov/media/163261/download Labeling is a separate issue from whether it’s edible.

Eagerly anticipating cultured sashimi v0.1 myself but it’s not wrong that this is still an expensive, rudimentary approximation of slaughtered meat products. We’ll get there—for a sustainable planet we have to—but the road is long and we ar

The charitable interpretation would be the on-topic one. > > > FDA: First-generation cultured meat is not illegal. > > I’m excited to taste mammoth! > This technology is still too young for that.

That’s not wrong. This thread began with a loose definition of “sterile” that you demonstrated understanding of above. The rest of us did OP the courtesy of not nitpicking it.

I think their point is that if a slaughtered animal is necessary for correct taste, the dream of tasting a mammoth won’t be fully realized by this technology.

This is a misleading statement. We don’t even try to keep slaughtered meat sterile during production; the animal’s immune system makes that unnecessary.

That’s correct. The challenge is that ensuring purity of ingredients during production is tricky at scale. A small mistake could ruin a large batch of food, lowering total yields and raising costs. Ideally the production process would inclu

Confusingly the article doesn’t ever explain this, just noting that the goats are “aptly named”: > The term is a reference to Judas Iscariot, an apostle of Jesus Christ who betrayed Jesus in the Bible. https://en.wikipedia.org

My latest peeve here is the websites that try to filter out non-numeric key presses in form fields. You don’t know where my number keys are! Sometimes the only way to enter a number is to copy and paste it from a text editor.

It was analogous to the “Messages” app that iPhones have—a single, zero-decision place to go for texting, that opportunistically upgrades privacy without the user having to understand anything.

Signal, WhatsApp, and iMessage frame privacy from the service operator as the norm, while the others relegate it to some “I’m being sneaky now” switch. Framing fundamental privacy measures as sneaky mode is actively harmful to their broader
