What is "facially reasonable" supposed to mean?

Just a note of appreciation for this thread. One of the things we can get out of debacles like this is a reassessment of how we should design software, and what we should look for in software designed by others. Food for thought.

First, it's clearly an analogy. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the book. Second, both involve some more powerful party trying to force-feed an interpretation using deliberately unclear language. It's close enough.

Thanks for the link! Hadn't heard of that, although I've seen similar reasoning in other contexts. (Basically, the most reasonable estimate, absent other data, is that you are at the mean -- so, for example, one could reasonably g

I think you misrepresent the comment, which was more "I know an anecdote cannot prove this, but..." Believing something while being aware your experience isn't really proof is not "faulty reasoning", since the aware

I'm not the OP, but I would guess he was coming at it from an app point of view rather than an implementation environment point of view -- as in, "why should I write an app this way (assuming I could use any language/tools)?&

Good. Google has been dominating search for a long time. At the very least, it is important to constrain how they can use that advantage. (I would rather see search de-monopolized. Not holding my breath...)

I'm not even ambivalent. It is clearly hostile toward the viewers, but helps content creators (or some content creators). Google is an ad-supported company. They are there to sell you soap, and have no more morality than P&G or Wal

Well, it was a good way to get me to cancel youtube premium. It seems like a clear indicator that we are the product, and content creators the actual customers. No worries, there are always alternatives.

A number of years ago, I reported a problem with its default Python mode and the way it automatically indents things. I got a response, which confirmed it was a problem. Then nothing happened and the report was eventually closed. For me, th

I have in the past, and probably will again. I can get turned off by the attitudes of those involved, though. I shouldn't; that's my limitation. But the elitism is sometimes pretty strong.

This is an absurdly limited point of view. If I charge 3x as much as other vendors, then force them to raise their prices by firebombing businesses that don't comply, it might (conceivably) maximize profit, but most people would think

You have to like the JVM, though, because all the errors are pretty much straight Java stacktraces -- very little encapsulation of any of that. So Clojure effectively means you have to know Java/JVM and Clojure.
