Here's hoping HTML 5 will deliver and this platform will be irrelevant. Zero-footprint! Silverlight looks too much like embrace and extend to me.

Seems like Microsoft FUD policies at work. This is not the result of any kind of study, just a measure to maintain market share. Increasing avenues of attack? I've heard that Chrome is currently has the most impressive security credentials

Systems that have no review of any kind are normally the ones that fail. Whether you are pairing or submitting to opensource where your code is checked, the quality goes up because things are checked. The more effective the communication t

Agreed, it's extending the usefulness of the platform. Saying nothing of IE7 or IE8: which are IE too.

So why doesn't Microsoft just announce that they will no longer be supporting IE6? They have, it's the same as XP's (8 April 2014). You answer your own question: products as widespread as IE6 cannot just be withdrawn overnight. It's quit

Don't dislike practices because there are people who are passionate about them. How you organize a team is up to you, but pair programming does remain a highly effective tool for some teams. It certainly beats change control boards.

Equally you could point to numerous systems not developed using any form of peer review and conclude the opposite. In the matter of fact there's probably more bad systems hacked together by solo programmers than there are written by communi

Perhaps programming isn't really for the masses, many of these points just describe traits in people that cause bad software to be written period. The best teams are those who are passionate about getting software right: they'll do whatever

How the kernel is organized has no meaning on how bloated it is Software organization can cause bloat if the feature can be implemented in another way. For example, there may be multiple ways to establish the same network connection. I'm

Confusing post, your example is how there is not a zero-sum game. No doubt Shaw was talking about futures/options and his experiences with hedging rather than finance in general.

The C++ guide interestingly recommends not using a number of language features (exceptions for instance) and advises a more standard-like approach on Windows. I wonder what seasoned windows programmers make of it http://google-styleguide.

I don't follow the reasoning that Britain's libel laws are too strong. - Singh could have apologised if he didn't mean it, it is clear that he wanted to portray chiropracty as quackery. From what I heard he also said that the evidence in co

I think it is all too easy to be dismissive. Powershell could just be another VBScript, but it is clear that it is Microsoft's response to the proven usefulness of a decent command-line on OS X. Being Unix is not a prerequisite for the comm
