I hate to say this, but OSS anarchism is not going to work. Most people cannot really work or live with those devices. This is a problem that needs to be solved with legislation, lobbying, superPACs, and candidates who are not ethically fle

Morals change, laws need to keep pace but should not anticipate changes in morals. Laws look backward at what was previously legal or illegal.

Ignoring the obvious problems with the study design that others have pointed out, it does seem like an interesting concept. We see several stories a year discussing the links between air pollution and dementia, and also a link between more

I tend to overcommit. E.g. take on a project or make a purchase that _requires_ me to learn the skill to be able to complete whatever that project is or use the thing I bought. I find having external "skin in the game" helps me fo

Didn’t Ford have a deal with Tata and Land Rover? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_Land_Rover As far as American cars being uncompetitive, I’m not so sure. They tend to be comfortable and powerful compared to man

No, not anymore. Now it’s banks and ETFs. Just another asset class, all the ideology is just a sideshow once everyone got rich. Now it’s just classic tax efficiency.

I should add - rotational inertia becomes a detractor with big ballscrews, too. An 8ft ballscrew weighs a lot, and that can make positional overshoot a problem with steppers or servos. Also, most ballscrews that hobbyists buy are rolled scr

I recommend that you use Clearpath servos. It is a step up in budget, but the motion is much smoother and there is no vibrations which are somewhat inherent in steppers. Linear motors are great, but are overkill unless you are concerned wit

ball screws are better, more expensive, and more rigid. to get them longer than ~50 inches you probably want to either get ones with a very high lead angle, or use ones with a driven ball nut design. R&P works totally fine for wood and

Go watch some videos of Kern machines. Their demonstrations of drilling through human hairs with a VMC are pretty compelling. it might be better to say that machine components and coordinate measuring systems have become cheaper, so that hi

If you need open source control, use LinuxCNC. If you need open source designs a) why? b) download any of the many designs on the internet constructed out of 8020. If you need to budget less than 8020, use maker slide. I've build multi

Accuracy and Precision would be problematic with this design, but, lack of rigidity is more insidious. Most of these high speed spindles will use carbide tooling, which is highly susceptible to breakdown under vibration. A flexible horrible

A linear motor is essentially a stepper motor that has been unrolled. The Stator and rotor are flat. Kern uses them in really high end VMCs and the result is better position control and better rigidity.

This must be a popular attitude with your employer? Do you really see no option to have a firm that requires the coordination of staff be a large enough task that it deserves its own specialists, or are you violating HN guidelines for fun?

Right, but the purpose of the narrative is not to compare whether we are doing the same thing. It is to blame China for the pandemic. TBH, if we did the same thing, I expect the rest of the world would blame us. That said, it seems pretty u

Not all investing is rent seeking. Rent seeking REQUIRES manipulation of public policy to benefit you. Being a landlord at the 5 building scale gives you no leverage in public policy. It makes you a capitalist.
