MSR was started by Nathan Myhrvold who recruited Rashid. Well, "started" may be ambiguous here. Nathan proposed it. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/people/nathan-myhrv...

Okay, this is wonderful, but there's an obvious, nagging question that hasn't been addressed--what happens if they run the simulation ahead of present time? We know they have fine-grain control over the speed of the simulation.

I just read "There Is No Antimemetics Division," and I was blown away. Really exhilarating science fiction that feels at once hyper-modern and yet retro in that it's more about ideas than characters. Very reminiscent of Ted C

Or, as I've seen in consumer bill-paying software, a confirmation dialog with extra info (given that the erroneous payment was two orders of magnitude unexpected): "Your last payment to Verizon was $78.98. Are you sure you wish to

Agreed. As is "The Terrible Secret of Space," also by The Laziest Men on Mars. Even more delightfully absurd (IMO), but never achieved the meme status of AYB: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_CoY0sBb1M

And I'll assume you've never driven an EV, because almost everyone who has purchased an EV will never go back to an ICE vehicle. An EV purchase is a ratchet. Hybrids make a lot of sense for some people today , but battery elect

I have the exact opposite impression. A few months ago I was directing a stage play, planning to shoot it with a high-end camera and stream it to YouTube via OBS. But I ran into two problems. First, I couldn't get a live feed from my c

The first comment on the article is better written and more credible than the article itself. Yes, selective enforcement sucks, but it seems the author's own neighborhood board asked for more enforcement? And, yes, over-sensitivity can

The efficacy number is about preventing cases of Covid-19, but in fact, even the "low" efficacy vaccines are extremely good at preventing severe illness and death. Once we get everyone vaccinated, we should be good. https:/&

That was my thought. There's a feature in Teslas to set the max charge, and normal usage is to put it at 80%-90% capacity to improve battery life. But that hidden range is still there, and you can access it if you're planning a lo

I'll go along with you that defunding is a form of ipso facto deplatforming and therefore bad. I think it's trumped in this case by the advertisers rights to free association (and Google's desire to attract advertisers). But

In the spirt of the article, maybe it would help to think of football as a turn-based game, rather than a real-time game. Most gamers have a marked preference for one but can still appreciate the other.

It's not really a mystery if you understand who the customers are. Tesla's Supercharger customers are Tesla owners (for the most part), and Tesla has a vested interest in keeping them happy. Other charging stations are mostly inst

I disagree. Even with insurance, it can be impossible to know how much you're going to pay in advance. I had a surgery a few years ago, and my insurer sat me down in advance and told me what was covered and what wasn't--the upshot

Those J1772 stations are useless unless you've got hours to kill. They charge at under 20mph--usually 18mph, but sometimes 12mph. And, in my experience, fully half of them are broken at any given time. The supercharger network compares
