This 100%. The main purpose of an operating system is to run programs and keep them running. Windows fails at that.

If you want to game, then picking a "gaming distro" probably is the right choice. Sure, you could use Fedora. But you need to know about enabling RPM Fusion, 32 bit repos for steam, etc. Now THAT is how you get someone to give up.

Yea, Rust is safe but it’s not magic. However Nginx doesn’t panic on malformed config. It exits with hopefully a helpful error code and message. The question is then could the cloudflare code have exited cleanly in a way that made recovery

I just checked and I don’t even have the JVM installed on my machine. It seems like Java is dead for consumer applications. Not saying that’s why they aren’t popular but I’m sure it doesn’t help.

Why not GPL? So we could be seeing closed source proprietary forks by now? How do you think the Zed team would feel about that?

Maybe the 3rd largest tech company in the entire world could spend a little time figuring out how to hot patch their OS. Heaven forbid they actually innovate on something.

The readme proudly proclaims: “ The end of Safari ad-blocking B.S.” Except that it’s just another declarative blocker spread across 4+ extensions. This seems like the same old B.S to me. Better off sticking with Firefox.

Because they show that Darwin may be technically open source, but Apple are horrible stewards of it. It's impossible to actually build a usable operating system from it, which is probably their intent.

Cool project, not cool that it needs to exist. Apple isn’t only content to leech off OSS software, they have to force the existence of more of it to workaround what they closed off.

Linux isn’t hard, it’s just different. Better, but different. That’s too much effort for some.

The saddest part is that they copy and pasted Skype, which was a decent program at the time. If you open pamixer and look at applications using audio it still shows up as Skype there. At least as of a few years ago.

That makes sense if you use application per workspace, which never made much sense to me. I'm often working on 3+ codebases or projects at the same time, each project has a browser window with associated tabs, an instance of an editor,

It's not even the tiling so much, but the ability to move directionally between windows using super+hjkl or whatever, that's the killer for me. The big DEs like KDE and GNOME can technically tile but you're still stuck with a

It's the same thing as a tiling WM, with all the benefits. You can still tile windows vertically or horizontally. The big improvement is that if I have a view with my browser, editor, a terminal or two all tiled nicely but then all of

Other benefits: 1. Consistent font and sizing. Pick the font you find easiest to read and set it in the terminal, now all TUI apps use it at the correct size. 2. Consistent theming. TUI apps use the same color scheme as your terminal, as yo

The linked post is worthless. It’s a bunch of whining about how various rust stuff doesn’t work correctly on Windows “The most popular OS for developers.” Nobody cares.
