My two major takeaways were as follows: 1) value comes from exploiting market inefficiencies in many cases 2) separate results from process (cause from effect) 3) intangibles are generally a weasel term for fitting the data to a narrative e

What I've read and heard from talking to a few scouts, teams don't look @ HS stats at all. With few exceptions (Bryce Harper is #1 ATM), they want projectability rather than performance.

I think the minor league (and Japanese league) translations are pretty well nailed down these days. See http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/minoreqa.php Of course, there is a huge amount of volatility, due to the changing true t

Everything coming out of the SABR community (SABR=society of american baseball researchers) says that high school stats are 99.9% worthless. The reasons are many, but mainly it's the following: inconsistent contexts (fields, opponents, lev

How many of those beta accounts are paying? Like I said, I know nothing of the space, so I wasn't even aware of competitors. I think that's good news that there are others already succeeding, now you just have to do things better than they

How many potential customers have you talked to that said they would 100% purchase this? While I would love it if you'd prove me wrong (go, do it! be a success!), your responses here appear a little naive. Spending 2 years building someth

I was in a similar spot about 6 months ago, and was looking in the SoCal angel scene. I found that having a prototype was awesome. Except that my prototype only had a few early users (under 1k, IIRC). The angels were impressed I had put i

On the other hand, because of the utility-based charges, you can run tests for a week or two if you'd like. Also, it sounds like what you're looking for is basically a calculator on top of the service -- are there really no decent calculato

You don't need to "become a Buddhist". Just expose yourself to some of their ways of thinking. Also, practice (= meditation). You'll pick a lot of this up as you get older, as well. It's a natural maturation process. I've been out of co

Take it from me -- you'll feel like you're doing pointless grind work in the "real world" as well. Except in a job, you'll feel the oppression even more. My problem has always been the curse of originality, or analysis paralysis. I think

I would like to emphasize ecaroth's point: Just start making stuff. Who cares if somebody already made it. Who cares if nobody will ever see it. Getting over that, in the last couple of years, has been the single best thing I could do for

It's worth noting that the science behind Vitamin D supplements is far from settled. On Nov 30, 2010, the USRDA lowered their recommended amount from 2000mg to 600mg for healthy adults. This reflects what the EU publishes as the recommende

Have you looked into Solr/Lucene? They're run by the apache foundation -- Lucene is the actual engine, and Solr is kind of a wrapper around it. Pretty easy to setup, will parse numerous input document formats. solr.apache.org i believe.
