Probably it's just that a street light problem is one that people add to their mental inventory. It's non-urgent. Whereas anyone with noise issues wants the noise to stop now .

I'd be careful about how you promote this job offering. As other said, you may either appear discriminatory or actually be in violation of state laws (some states do not allow you to discriminate based on sexuality). If it's clear you'll

Any particular reason you're not just using the community edition? Do you need the innodb features? (I'm asking because I've been wondering lately if I should make the switch...)

Seems to me, though, that if you're not bringing a technical co-founder, you'd better be bringing cash to the table. A technical co founder can exchange time for code. Without them, you need some other medium, which is invariably cash (or

This is so important I wanted to highlight it. >Ask yourself questions first: what is is exactly you want to know, and to what extent are you willing to take action on the outcome.

I work in epidemiology, specifically sending surveys to huge cohorts. This is what we've found through a lit review (sorry, don't have original sources but they're out there on PubMed). - incentives are huge. But know if you're asking som

I think OP was suggesting that it's the responsibility of those companies to warn their users, etc. Not that it was the firesheep dev's responsibility.

Human friendly is also SEO friendly. I bet there's a HUGE long tail of people looking for properties via some combination of those keywords. I can even see a use case where I went to look at a property with Joe Black Realty in City Center,

What advantages does your approach have over simply sending an anonymous email? Your idea looks to break down as follows: pain: sometimes telling someone necessary causes an interpersonal friction because the recipient of the feedback is a

E.g., just ran across this article on design in the HN newest section. It's on how to apply phi (golden ratio) to your designs. http://designshack.co.uk/articles/graphics/applying-the-gold...

First, realize that web dev and web design are two different (although connected) fields. You should have very little trouble with web dev, based on your coding and database background. To get better at design, read and practice! Alistapar

Congratulations for sticking through and finishing! In the future, however, I would recommend that you use something more like agile or Steve Blank principles. That way you don't end up half way through something, with a big amount of time

The major problem that I see is the opposition of incentives. Your core idea is that, "there's a piece of information you want someone to know, but you don't want them to realize that you know that they know." This builds uncertainty. Can'

Seems to me there's two questions here: 1) do I need to secure this / does it matter if people get spammed? 2) how do I secure this I'd proceed until apprehended with #1. As long as it's simple to delete. I like the confirmation idea, but

How are most emails sent over https? Emails are generally send SMTP (if you're lucky, your provider uses TLS, but there's no guarantees).

I use graph algorithms when I'm walking somewhere downtown. With the shortest path defined by lights that are green / red. Sometimes I'll switch it up a bit and use a different search algorithm just for variety.

Interesting point. But those "features" existed (albeit in a mediocre form). So maybe "implementation of features" or "quality of features" sells a product...? Speaking just for myself: I don't use SO (or reddit) because of the features t

On the other hand, the reason it's work and they call you a professional is because you get paid. By definition. I don't see anything wrong with showing some gumption and savvy to approach directly. For one, it shows that they understand

I think that's actually a pretty reasonable way of doing things. That said, I probably wouldn't worry too much about getting 9 pages of rankings -- once you're past 1 or 2, does it really matter (except as "boy I need to work on that one")

You seem to be pretty close to this guy's analysis of the top 1k sites in google: http://blog.sucuri.net/2010/06/google-top-1000-sites-interes... He figures that 15.3% of websites are written in PHP. However, the WP numbers are super low

If you have a Mac (fast Mac), Coda is very Mac-like and friendly. However it slows my 1 year old Macbook pro down quite a bit, so it's by no measure "fast". More of a text editor too, really.
