I worked at Xerox for over 20 years and never heard this story. Not surprising, though, there were lots of little groups working on things they never spoke of.

I've used MuseScore on and off, mostly because it's UI frustrates me and gets in the way. It's powerful, but it needs a way to make simple notation easy. If they're truly going to make it better for casual users, I'

I'm currently adjunct faculty in a software engineering program. I have no expectation of future work beyond the end of this semester as my school has announced massive cutbacks across the board. I'm "lucky" in that I do

When my last espresso machine died I switched to the AeroPress as a temporary replacement. It didn't take long before I realized I didn't need to buy another espresso machine.

I have the RTL-SDR and use it mostly for monitoring VHF/UHF, and it works just fine. There's nothing interesting in my area above 900 MHz so the frequency limitation above 1 GHz isn't an issue for me. It's a great way to

I joined Xerox in the mid-90s, past the era when they were creating their own processors and programming languages but they still couldn't resist building one last operating system for a new digital printer/copier. The product was

I run Plan 9 in a VM now and then which means I've never gotten that far into it. It seems very much like a solution to a problem that I've never had and as such doesn't do much for me. The article's author is a writer b

I was amazed by Usenet when I first encountered it. Communicating with people around the globe really seemed like the future had arrived. The company I worked for would connect to the University of Rochester via a Telebit Trailblazer modem

So many of these people I knew by name but had no idea what they looked like or at best hadn't seen a photo of them in 20+ years (which is effectively the same thing). As a photographer, it's always nice to see black&white pho

As a Mac user looking to avoid Illustrator, this is a gift from the gods. XQuartz has issues with mouse movement, making it difficult to keep the drawing on the screen. Now it looks and acts like you'd expect.
